This track was built almost 100 years ago and it did set new standards back then. Unfortunately, due to a bad decision it lost the right to host the French Grand Prix and it never got it back. Most people don´t even know this track even exists!
In this video we are going onboard in, not one but two laps, in the original oval circuit and also we go through the history of this amazing vintage circuit and some of the most famous crashes, some of them, fatal.
This place is a time machine!
Have fun!

on october 4 1924 the track turns out to be very successful two months after its opening a hundred records were recorded in particular during the period between 1925 and 1939 86 of the world records france grand prix in the lead other challenges than unheard of such as races between a car and a plane are fashionable and of interest to the general public anecdotally the first to try to break a taken its first steps there on its world-renowned tracks and technical laboratories the truck consists of a 1.55 mile 33 degree banked oval electric lighting is set up for night time riding and endurance record attempts without any neighborhood nearby it was causing no significant noise troubles thereby its development never ceased the twisting 12.5 kilometers road course that was completed in time to hold the 1925 french grand prix monterey offered various track combinations from 2.5 kilometers to 12.5 kilometers the grand prix used the long circuit and was run clockwise oval racing on the other hand was run counterclockwise the track shares some similarities with monza by having an oval and a road course but here the oval is always used even if only half of it but also the angle of the banking is much higher the winners of the initial 1925 1000 kilometers race 80 laps on the 12.5 kilometers circuit were job benua and albert divo who were sharing the large number 10 2lcv the race was marked by a tragedy the fatal crash of alfa romeo driver antonio askari the father of future f1 star alberto askari he was the super driver of that time here’s the full story the 19th grand prix the lot mobile club de france was held in late july but in conditions very different to those of our visits dark clouds raised overheads whipped along by a wind that buffeted the 30 000 strong crowd they had come in anticipation of a master class for hitting the fields was the great antonio ascari on paper askari would face stiff competition from his teammate giuseppe campari and delusions driven by robert benoir and louis wagner but in reality the italian was in unstoppable form driving the formidable alpha romeo p2 ascari had destroyed the opposition in the previous belgian grand prix at spa so far ahead of the game were the italians and so frustrated were the belgian fans by their superiority the p2’s designer vittorio giano had even mocked the crowds by organized a mid-race picnic at the table in the pit lane if askari was expecting to walk to an easy victory in france he wasn’t taking anything for granted his competition records outside italy was poor a litany of bad luck and mechanical failure and while he approached this season of world championship races with great zeal he had not been thrilled by what he saw on a preliminary spring visit to monterey i quote this circuit presents difficulties and hazards that are useful to neither men nor machines he stated how long only two stretches and up on that splendid banked section can you do anything approaching full speed for the reminder of the truck you must slow down and be very careful you don’t go off the track end quote his words were to be painfully prophetic the flag dropped early on rest day the drivers beginning their marathon exertions at 8 00 am ahead lay many hours of energy sapping driving around g-force including banking through tight hairpins and crests that sent the cars airborne at 620 miles this was to be the longest one day race yet held ascari began as he had finished in belgium streaking into a lead which even after just 10 laps seemed unassailable after about 2 hours of running he pulled off the banking for a routine pit stop his lead was so great said his crew he could easily ride back and protect his car whether or not he slowed down is a matter of some debate for although his lap times dropped off it had begun to rain on lap 23 the alpha team became anxious the italian had failed to return racing back towards the banked section as carrie had misjudged the conditions through an almost flat out left hander dropping a wheel off the road at the apex the alpha made contact with a series of posts used to line the edge of the truck sliding and then somersaulting along the track the car flung its helpless driver out before cruelly crushing him he died in the ambulance on the way to hospital note that emergency services took too long to arrive to the scene of the crash alfa romeo subsequently withdrew from the race leaving benoit to win his home grand prix at the muted post race ceremony the frenchman drove his deluge to the site of haskari’s demise and gently laid his victory wrath beside the track monterey’s first grand prix had caused the life of the world’s finest driver his famous son alberto askari died the same way in 1955 while practicing in the monster truck also after a fast left band the autodrome montlier became france’s pre-world leading venue for motor racing it hosted the race seven more times in 1927 1931 and five times between 1933 and 1937. it was two years before monterrey hosted the grand prix again an event notable both for the domination of the deluges and the shock absence of the bugattis which were withdrawn at last minutes when a tory bugatti realized the chasm in performance between the two marks the race was won by robert benoit in a deluge in 1929 helen is drove an omega-6 to victory in the all-female grand prix of the third journey feminine in 1931 the french grand prix at montlick was a part of the inaugural association internationale de automobile club recony the forerunner to the fia european championship season in this race bugatti would get his revenge when akilevarzi and luis shiron’s type 51 won the race ahead of campari’s 8c monza alpha this race took 10 hours it was not run over a fixed distance those were the grand prix rules for that year from 1933 to 1937 monterey would become the sole host of the french grand prix as the french were always changing the grand prix venue little had changed two years later when giuseppe campari won driving a maserati helding off the close attentions of philip attensla again the circuit earned a reputation as a car breaker although the presence of five alphas in the top six was a fascinating clue to the outcome of the 1934 race a race that saw the first ever appearance of the mighty silver arrows outside germany also in 1933 it became the property of the car manufacturer citroen who installed the testing facility for the brand’s own cars in 1934 luigi ho scored an unexpected victory for the alfa romeo p3 against the debut of the much wanted mercedes-benz and auto union teams but the tide was clearly turning in germany’s favor in 1935 not even a virtuoso performance from tazeon valarie could prevent the inevitable and when his aging alpha eventually retired the door was left open for rudolf caracciola to lead home a mercedes procession it was the beginning of the end for montliere as a grand prix venue in 1936 and 37 rather than suffered inevitable german winds the organizers chose to ignore the presence of the german teams all together and run the event for sports cars instead the move proved universally unpopular although at least they were guaranteed a french winner so while all around europe race fans flocked to hear the whining of the supercharged silver arrows at monterrey they were treated to the site of bugattis talbos and de la hayes driven by aging racers our local hot shoes raymond some and jumpy rv mill won in 1936 driving a bugatti while luis chiron as one driving a talbot in 1937. in 1938 the circuit was stripped of the right to host the french grand prix it would never hold it again if you made it this far you are probably enjoying this video so please give it a like and feel free to subscribe it takes a long time and efforts to produce these kind of videos but sometimes they pop up around here let’s proceed in 1936 the auto drum was closed the bill providing for its acquisition by the state is not passed the railway line passing through lina the r page on a also ceases faced with high operation costs and the state of the concrete coating deteriorating and no longer allowing the single sitters to run at high speed the administrators of the auto drum had to resign themselves to its sale in 1939 the 750 actors of the domain are required by the national domain which places them at the disposal of the ministry of war in september 1939 the general staff of the army set up a training camp there the center for the organization of motorcyclists and armored cars of monterey the second world war had serious consequences for the circuit it was badly damaged due to lack of maintenance from mid-1944 the americans used the autodrome as a fuel reserve and transit camp after the short period of its management by the american army the auto drum was handed over to the french army in particular under the leadership of colonel antoine pay in december 1946 the state signed a management contract with setac in return for the payment of an annual fee to the state the technical union for the automobile motorcycle and cycle utak obtains a long-term lease to manage the trucks and the facilities of the auto drone on a civil basis subject to its restoration maintenance and the organization of competitions the ring opens again in february 1947 the full circuit in june 1947. this work will allow the circuit to diversify its activities in particular in the technical and experimental fields among others the test benches of the auto journal attack operates the outer drum mainly for technical tests from now on the circuit is specially devoted to the tests of manufacturers by the uttak here the truck went into a phase of modernization and construction of new facilities with the creation of new laboratories the timing tower grandstand 34 pits two foot bridges spanning the truck and two chicanes north and south of the circuit being temporarily made with straw bales between 1948 and 1950 a 4.7 mile variant of the truck was used followed by a combined road and truck circuit of 3.9 miles in 1952 after dwarf racing returned to monterrey although never in quite the same fashion as in the 30s in the late 1950s and early 60s it held a string of important sports car races such as the paris 1 000 kilometers and 12 hours of paris great names of the period took part in those events the rodriguez brothers earning ferrari victories in 61 and 62. by 64 the field had grown even stronger with graham hill joe bonier jackie stewart chris eamon edgar barth and many others making an appearance once again however tragedy would strike the circuit this time with the most serious consequences halfway into the 1964 race torrential reigns arrived leaving the banking in a treacherous state several cars had already crashed out when peter lindner lost control of his jaguar e-type and careered into the open pit lane at unabated speed there waiting to pull away was the abarth of francopatria in the collision both drivers and three race officials lost their lives the truck layout had not been changed since the 1920s and the circuit appeared to be very dangerous even in the mid-60s when drivers hardly seem to care for safety after the accident some chicanes got added to the truck to prevent the cars reaching the pits at full speed but those changes only delayed the decline of monterey 1970 saw jack brabham and francois seven winning the last of the famous 1 000 kilometers de paris races in a matra 660. only minor national championships raced at monterey in the 70s the tragedy cast a heavy shadow over monterey’s suite ability as a venue for championship races and while events did continue there until the early 70s it was never at the same level the circuit fell into decline and was closed in 1973. the current circuit was built in 1982 and international racing returned in 1994 with the revived paris 1000 kilometers for international gt racing although the course proved too bumpy and monterrey dropped once more from the international calendar a year later in 2004 the homologation of the circuit for competitions is withdrawn and the future of the auto drum is in danger it will take the mobilization of former drivers jean-claude andrew jean-pierre beltois enjpes kaholo patrick tambay to avoid the closure and demolition of the circuit in the 2000s utec undertook major renovation work to bring the truck up to regulatory standards some protection fences for spectators able to resist a 300 kilometers per hour crash are set with the increase of high powered racing cars in the early 2000s to the delight of motor enthusiasts the speed circuit was finally accredited again in 2010 as a test center utak sergeant has worked for many years on the evolution of vehicles it recently added to its facilities a driverless test track in order to fine-tune the vehicles of the future last but not least the racing track hosts a dozen or so popular events every year attracting more than a hundred thousand spectators to this legendary track on an annual basis but the historical motorsport brought monterey back in the spotlight in the 1980s today the grand prix de las doche is one of the most important annual events in the historic scene and this is it i hope you enjoy this video if you did give it a like comment if you have something to say or ask and feel free to subscribe this is a crazy channel with lots of different videos but sometimes stuff like this pops up thanks for watching and i see you in the next video take care [Music] [Music] [Music] you .

0.799 driving the formidable alpha romeo p2
0.799 ascari had destroyed the opposition in
0.799 the previous belgian grand prix at spa
0.799 so far ahead of the game were the
0.799 italians and so frustrated were the
0.799 belgian fans by their superiority the
0.799 p2&;s designer vittorio giano had even
0.799 mocked the crowds by organized a
0.799 mid-race picnic at the table in the pit
0.799 lane if askari was expecting to walk to
0.799 an easy victory in france he wasn&;t
0.799 taking anything for granted his
0.799 competition records outside italy was
0.799 poor a litany of bad luck and mechanical
0.799 failure and while he approached this
0.799 season of world championship races with
0.799 great zeal he had not been thrilled by
0.799 what he saw on a preliminary spring
0.799 visit to monterey i quote
0.799 this circuit presents difficulties and
0.799 hazards that are useful to neither men
0.799 nor machines he stated how long only two
0.799 stretches and up on that splendid banked
0.799 section can you do anything approaching
0.799 full speed for the reminder of the truck
0.799 you must slow down and be very careful
0.799 you don&;t go off the track
0.799 end quote
0.799 his words were to be painfully prophetic
0.799 the flag dropped early on rest day the
0.799 drivers beginning their marathon
0.799 exertions at 8 00 am
0.799 ahead lay many hours of energy sapping
0.799 driving around g-force including banking
0.799 through tight hairpins and crests that
0.799 sent the cars airborne
0.799 at 620 miles this was to be the longest
0.799 one day race yet held ascari began as he
0.799 had finished in belgium streaking into a
0.799 lead which even after just 10 laps
0.799 seemed unassailable
0.799 after about 2 hours of running he pulled
0.799 off the banking for a routine pit stop
0.799 his lead was so great said his crew he
0.799 could easily ride back and protect his
0.799 car
0.799 whether or not he slowed down is a
0.799 matter of some debate for although his
0.799 lap times dropped off it had begun to
0.799 rain on lap 23 the alpha team became
0.799 anxious the italian had failed to return
0.799 racing back towards the banked section
0.799 as carrie had misjudged the conditions
0.799 through an almost flat out left hander
0.799 dropping a wheel off the road at the
0.799 apex the alpha made contact with a
0.799 series of posts used to line the edge of
0.799 the truck sliding and then somersaulting
0.799 along the track the car flung its
0.799 helpless driver out before cruelly
0.799 crushing him he died in the ambulance on
0.799 the way to hospital note that emergency
0.799 services took too long to arrive to the
0.799 scene of the crash
0.799 alfa romeo subsequently withdrew from
0.799 the race leaving benoit to win his home
0.799 grand prix at the muted post race
0.799 ceremony the frenchman drove his deluge
0.799 to the site of haskari&;s demise and
0.799 gently laid his victory wrath beside the
0.799 track monterey&;s first grand prix had
0.799 caused the life of the world&;s finest
0.799 driver
0.799 his famous son alberto askari died the
0.799 same way in 1955 while practicing in the
0.799 monster truck also after a fast left
0.799 band
0.799 the autodrome montlier became france&;s
0.799 pre-world leading venue for motor racing
0.799 it hosted the race seven more times in
0.799 1927
0.799 1931 and five times between 1933
0.799 and 1937. it was two years before
0.799 monterrey hosted the grand prix again an
0.799 event notable both for the domination of
0.799 the deluges and the shock absence of the
0.799 bugattis which were withdrawn at last
0.799 minutes when a tory bugatti realized the
0.799 chasm in performance between the two
0.799 marks the race was won by robert benoit
0.799 in a deluge
0.799 in 1929 helen is drove an omega-6 to
0.799 victory in the all-female grand prix of
0.799 the third journey feminine in 1931 the
0.799 french grand prix at montlick was a part
0.799 of the inaugural association
0.799 internationale de automobile club recony
0.799 the forerunner to the fia european
0.799 championship season
0.799 in this race bugatti would get his
0.799 revenge when akilevarzi and luis
0.799 shiron&;s type 51 won the race ahead of
0.799 campari&;s 8c monza alpha
0.799 this race took 10 hours it was not run
0.799 over a fixed distance those were the
0.799 grand prix rules for that year from 1933
0.799 to 1937
0.799 monterey would become the sole host of
0.799 the french grand prix as the french were
0.799 always changing the grand prix venue
0.799 little had changed two years later when
0.799 giuseppe campari won driving a maserati
0.799 helding off the close attentions of
0.799 philip attensla
0.799 again the circuit earned a reputation as
0.799 a car breaker although the presence of
0.799 five alphas in the top six was a
0.799 fascinating clue to the outcome of the
0.799 1934 race a race that saw the first ever
0.799 appearance of the mighty silver arrows
0.799 outside germany also in 1933 it became
0.799 the property of the car manufacturer
0.799 citroen who installed the testing
0.799 facility for the brand&;s own cars in
0.799 1934 luigi ho scored an unexpected
0.799 victory for the alfa romeo p3 against
0.799 the debut of the much wanted
0.799 mercedes-benz and auto union teams
0.799 but the tide was clearly turning in
0.799 germany&;s favor
0.799 in 1935 not even a virtuoso performance
0.799 from tazeon valarie could prevent the
0.799 inevitable and when his aging alpha
0.799 eventually retired the door was left
0.799 open for rudolf caracciola to lead home
0.799 a mercedes procession it was the
0.799 beginning of the end for montliere as a
0.799 grand prix venue
0.799 in 1936 and 37 rather than suffered
0.799 inevitable german winds the organizers
0.799 chose to ignore the presence of the
0.799 german teams all together and run the
0.799 event for sports cars instead the move
0.799 proved universally unpopular although at
0.799 least they were guaranteed a french
0.799 winner so while all around europe race
0.799 fans flocked to hear the whining of the
0.799 supercharged silver arrows at monterrey
0.799 they were treated to the site of
0.799 bugattis talbos and de la hayes driven
0.799 by aging racers our local hot shoes
0.799 raymond some and jumpy rv mill won in
0.799 1936 driving a bugatti while luis chiron
0.799 as one driving a talbot in 1937. in 1938
0.799 the circuit was stripped of the right to
0.799 host the french grand prix it would
0.799 never hold it again
0.799 if you made it this far you are probably
0.799 enjoying this video so please give it a
0.799 like and feel free to subscribe it takes
0.799 a long time and efforts to produce these
0.799 kind of videos but sometimes they pop up
0.799 around here let&;s proceed
0.799 in 1936 the auto drum was closed the
0.799 bill providing for its acquisition by
0.799 the state is not passed the railway line
0.799 passing through lina the r page on a
0.799 also ceases faced with high operation
0.799 costs and the state of the concrete
0.799 coating deteriorating and no longer
0.799 allowing the single sitters to run at
0.799 high speed the administrators of the
0.799 auto drum had to resign themselves to
0.799 its sale in 1939
0.799 the 750
0.799 actors of the domain are required by the
0.799 national domain which places them at the
0.799 disposal of the ministry of war in
0.799 september 1939 the general staff of the
0.799 army set up a training camp there the
0.799 center for the organization of
0.799 motorcyclists
0.799 and armored cars of monterey the second
0.799 world war had serious consequences for
0.799 the circuit it was badly damaged due to
0.799 lack of maintenance
0.799 from
0.799 mid-1944 the americans used the
0.799 autodrome as a fuel reserve and transit
0.799 camp after the short period of its
0.799 management by the american army the auto
0.799 drum was handed over to the french army
0.799 in particular under the leadership of
0.799 colonel antoine pay in december 1946
0.799 the state signed a management contract
0.799 with setac in return for the payment of
0.799 an annual fee to the state the technical
0.799 union for the automobile motorcycle and
0.799 cycle utak obtains a long-term lease to
0.799 manage the trucks and the facilities of
0.799 the auto drone on a civil basis subject
0.799 to its restoration maintenance and the
0.799 organization of competitions the ring
0.799 opens again in february 1947
0.799 the full circuit in june 1947.
0.799 this work will allow the circuit to
0.799 diversify its activities in particular
0.799 in the technical and experimental fields
0.799 among others the test benches of the
0.799 auto journal attack operates the outer
0.799 drum mainly for technical tests from now
0.799 on the circuit is specially devoted to
0.799 the tests of manufacturers by the uttak
0.799 here the truck went into a phase of
0.799 modernization and construction of new
0.799 facilities with the creation of new
0.799 laboratories the timing tower grandstand
0.799 34 pits two foot bridges spanning the
0.799 truck and two chicanes north and south
0.799 of the circuit being temporarily made
0.799 with straw bales
0.799 between 1948 and 1950 a 4.7 mile variant
0.799 of the truck was used
0.799 followed by a combined road and truck
0.799 circuit of 3.9 miles in 1952 after dwarf
0.799 racing returned to monterrey although
0.799 never in quite the same fashion as in
0.799 the 30s in the late 1950s and early 60s
0.799 it held a string of important sports car
0.799 races such as the paris 1 000 kilometers
0.799 and 12 hours of paris great names of the
0.799 period took part in those events the
0.799 rodriguez brothers earning ferrari
0.799 victories in 61 and 62. by 64 the field
0.799 had grown even stronger with graham hill
0.799 joe bonier jackie stewart chris eamon
0.799 edgar barth and many others making an
0.799 appearance
0.799 once again however tragedy would strike
0.799 the circuit this time with the most
0.799 serious consequences
0.799 halfway into the 1964 race torrential
0.799 reigns arrived leaving the banking in a
0.799 treacherous state several cars had
0.799 already crashed out when peter lindner
0.799 lost control of his jaguar e-type and
0.799 careered into the open pit lane at
0.799 unabated speed there waiting to pull
0.799 away was the abarth of francopatria in
0.799 the collision both drivers and three
0.799 race officials lost their lives
0.799 the truck layout had not been changed
0.799 since the 1920s
0.799 and the circuit appeared to be very
0.799 dangerous even in the mid-60s when
0.799 drivers hardly seem to care for safety
0.799 after the accident some chicanes got
0.799 added to the truck to prevent the cars
0.799 reaching the pits at full speed but
0.799 those changes only delayed the decline
0.799 of monterey
0.799 1970 saw jack brabham and francois seven
0.799 winning the last of the famous 1 000
0.799 kilometers de paris races in a matra
0.799 660.
0.799 only minor national championships raced
0.799 at monterey in the 70s
0.799 the tragedy cast a heavy shadow over
0.799 monterey&;s suite ability as a venue for
0.799 championship races
0.799 and while events did continue there
0.799 until the early 70s it was never at the
0.799 same level the circuit fell into decline
0.799 and was closed in 1973.
0.799 the current circuit was built in 1982
0.799 and international racing returned in
0.799 1994 with the revived paris 1000
0.799 kilometers for international gt racing
0.799 although the course proved too bumpy and
0.799 monterrey dropped once more from the
0.799 international calendar a year later
0.799 in 2004 the homologation of the circuit
0.799 for competitions is withdrawn and the
0.799 future of the auto drum is in danger
0.799 it will take the mobilization of former
0.799 drivers jean-claude andrew
0.799 jean-pierre beltois enjpes kaholo
0.799 patrick tambay to avoid the closure and
0.799 demolition of the circuit
0.799 in the 2000s utec undertook major
0.799 renovation work to bring the truck up to
0.799 regulatory standards
0.799 some protection fences for spectators
0.799 able to resist a 300 kilometers per hour
0.799 crash are set with the increase of high
0.799 powered racing cars in the early 2000s
0.799 to the delight of motor enthusiasts the
0.799 speed circuit was finally accredited
0.799 again in 2010 as a test center utak
0.799 sergeant has worked for many years on
0.799 the evolution of vehicles it recently
0.799 added to its facilities a driverless
0.799 test track in order to fine-tune the
0.799 vehicles of the future
0.799 last but not least the racing track
0.799 hosts a dozen or so popular events every
0.799 year attracting more than a hundred
0.799 thousand spectators to this legendary
0.799 track on an annual basis
0.799 but the historical motorsport brought
0.799 monterey back in the spotlight in the
0.799 1980s today
0.799 the grand prix de las doche is one of
0.799 the most important annual events in the
0.799 historic scene
0.799 and this is it
0.799 i hope you enjoy this video if you did
