Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: hey folks in this video we’re uh back to the subject of cars again with this little observer’s book of automobiles i’ve been um procrastinating about making a video on this book because i loved it so much when i was a kid it’s kind of personal kind of gives me a lot more anxiety so bear with me i know i could never get anyone else to love this book and i could never do do it justice but but hopefully i can make it somewhat interesting and relaxing for you i i did a little research on these observer books for this video i’ve i’ve had this video i’m sorry i’ve had this book for a long time but i didn’t really know a lot about the series and so i i looked up a little bit so these little observers books were published in the uk and intended for for children they covered various topics the first one was in 1937 on british birds there are over 800 variations of these little observer books going all the way into the 1980s the first ones tended to focus on nature but later they branched out to other subjects like this automobiles version the first of these automobiles observers was 1955. and this is the fifth edition 1959. when i got this book as a kid it was already old i don’t know exactly when something transforms from old to uh vintage but when when i got this book it was simply old my dad probably picked it up at a garage sale or a thrift store my dad banted himself a collector with a fine eye for good deals he often said things like that’s going to be worth a lot of money someday well this little book’s not worth a lot but that’s okay that’s not why i keep it as i noted this this one is 1959. even as a kid i had already formed some opinions about cars my wife was also from a car family and she always always jokes that uh there’s pennzoil in our in our veins but i had formed opinions even as a kid and i was not a huge fan of 1959 american cars in the in the 50s particularly the second part of the decade finns became popular in america and this reached its height in 1959 it was peak fin the cars were really wide with huge fins and to be honest as a kid i thought they were kind of ugly and ridiculous i have more respect for them now but even though i was not a huge fan of the 1959 american cars at the time i still loved this book as a kid i uh i devoured it i read and re-read this book over the years each time seeing new things i hadn’t seen before with a new perspective even later when i started getting real cars i might turn back to this book to look for insights i mean over the years i have owned a few cars or certainly since most the brands of the world are in this book certainly brands of cars that are in this book and this is this is from the uk and is international in nature so it covers cars from all over the world and car makers from all over the world and so the american cars are really a relatively small part of it which at the time opened up a new world for me um to a degree i’d obviously seen other than american cars but this book showed me all kinds of new makers and and cars i hadn’t seen before or i hadn’t even heard of before in some cases um what we used to call foreign cars back in the day now i’m a little nervous handling this book because it is a bit fragile it would have had a paper jacket when it was new but i never saw that by the time i got this book that jacket was long gone so it wasn’t there when i got the book you can see it’s a hardback book small pocket sized you could say and there’s some damage on the cover in spots there’s also some water damage on the book pages themselves in some places but what i’m most worried about is the binding you know as i flip through the pages so this book has a forward by sir sterling moss he was a legendary and and beloved british racing driver and the years just before this book he had finished in second place for these four years 55 56 57 58 in the formula one championship in 59 his hopes for winning were were dashed in the final race of the year in florida when when his car let him down sterling moss just recently died a couple years ago at the age of 90. i’m gonna oh i’m not gonna i’m probably not gonna read a lot of these these pages in this book i mean i guess we’ll see how it goes but i am gonna read this forward by sterling moss at a time when the prestige of british cars and drivers has never been higher i am very pleased to have been asked to write the forward to this the latest edition of the observer’s book of automobiles since the automobile first appeared before an amazed and sometimes antagonistic world its shape and mechanical configuration have changed many times to arrive at the car we know today with its flowing lines powerful engine automatic transmission and reliable brakes in this compact little volume the editor is contrived to present the more prominent and interesting of the world’s cars in a non-technical manner understandable even to the youngest enthusiast it is interesting to be able to compare the cars of this country with those of the usa france germany the ussr and even japan by merely turning a page or two instead of thumbing through a pile of assorted magazines and leaflets the idea behind the book is to enable the reader to learn what the current products of the world’s manufacturers look like and what their vital statistics are in this object i think that the editor has succeeded admirably it is a satisfying experience to be able to recognize the old volga or tatra that one may see and then turn up a complete set of details on the car it is good to see also that sports cars are featured prominently for there is a great interest in this type of car especially in america and it was the little mg which did so much to make the new world sports car conscious to further the prestige british cars in the markets of the world some of the more potent bodies such as the testerosa ferrari are included also for their details are of interest to every enthusiast i am sure that this book will find a place on the bookshelf of every car fan and will no doubt be used to help settle those many arguments which always seem to arise when enthusiasts of any type get together sterling moss it’s got a little brief history the 1885 benz three-wheeled car now the photographs in this book are what are not called halftones so this is printed black ink on this slightly glossy paper and so there’s no process for color so these halftone images if you were to look at them with a microscope or perhaps even just a good magnifying glass you would see that they’re just dots it’s all black there’s no gray ink being printed on this page all the ink is one color black so all these different shades we see are an illusion created by the dots of the halftone and of course this book is pretty small so it’s another challenge kind of showing it because um it’s kind of hard to get it in frame and to really see you know the kind of details of some of these photos and it’s an a to z book so when it starts when we start into look at that thing this says 19 question mark question mark the turbo car of the future this model made to 2 or 3 8 scale i should say was designed by egm wilkes pool pj ashmore as a rear mounted gas turbine car for the festival of britain 1951. so that was their depiction of what a car of the future would would look like i mean i guess they got a few things right and this goes through the years of different attributes as cars evolved and of course because this book is 1959 this list of things ends in 1959 and here’s a whole section on how an automobile works and as i said these books were intended for children and their objective was to spark some interest in a given subject and i i’ll say that certainly worked on me now i was already interested in cars but i mean this was just uh accelerated that this has a lot of information about some of the main components of a car and this is how an automobile works you know i mean i learned this is this these diagrams are showing the operation of a four-stroke engine or at least some of the main aspects of that you know and i i learned even as a little kid this this four-stroke engine as well as two-stroke and the differences and uh i learned that very young i don’t even know if most kids ever learned that these days so even though this book is for kids i mean it goes into some detail i mean it’s certainly not going to be a mechanics book for how to repair a certain car but it has a lot of information different kinds of engines v f head l head some technologies you don’t see very often a puppet valve but as i said this is an a to z book so uh i’ll just go through it in that order i suppose rather than flip around and uh there’s so many i obviously unlikely to get through them all in in one video so we’ll see how far we get in this video but here’s ac i might read the first paragraph the ac company commenced operation with a small three-wheeled commercial vehicle known as the auto carrier not making its first passenger model the ac tri-car with a single cylinder air cooled engine until 1909. so ac is great britain is the manufacturer ac car is limited thames denton surrey england so you may recognize this car less from the ac but later the ac an ac car was used for the shelby cobra it was called the ac cobra now that didn’t exist yet at the time of this book but uh it um that was might be one reason why you might recognize these cars and you can see there’s a fair bit of info on every little car and horsepower and specifications like that and they usually show at least a few models produced by that maker so here’s alpha romeo this is italian so italy sa alpha romeo yeah marco opio trillano 33 miyan italy milan editing italy but this lists the current models 1959 the julietta the berlina paloche coupe spider below j super saloon berlina spider and then as as i know and it’ll show a few different versions so here’s a sprint veloce 1959 these alphas are cool cars these old outfits i think at the time i got this book i barely barely knew what an alpha was here’s a julieta spider spider below j that’s a really cool car these alphas all the way from these years and even a little before all the way going up into the 70s had basically the same engine a little twin cam four cylinders and they changed cubic inches or or liters over the years they changed size but they uh they basically all use the same same main engine a couple more outfits and hills here’s an ollard i don’t think that car is from great britain i don’t think those cars were imported into the us so if we see any of these they would have been you know brought over special the allard motor company london england you can see a couple of those alerts a couple sports cars a sport coupe grand tree small coop or as we say in england the coupe [Applause] here’s another british car the alves and likewise i don’t believe this car was imported into the us generally so any any model you’d see here in the us would be would have been brought in separately i can see that binding is iffy scaring me a little here’s another car maker from great britain armstrong sidley it’s a large saloon car that’s like refer to them in england looks like it was kind of a competitor with uh rolls-royce here’s a french car andronde france paris france again i don’t think these cars were imported into the us so again as i noted before i mean this book exposed me to all kinds of cars around them made around the world that you know you just didn’t see in the states you know and you certainly saw a big contrast between the huge american cars of this time in these smaller cars of europe and great britain and uh you know that’s true today but perhaps to a somewhat lesser degree but you generally don’t see large cars as much in europe or particularly the uk with especially in around london so here’s aston martin now that obviously is a brand that was imported and continues to be imported into the us and we basically got we basically got the db4 the james bond car right here now i don’t believe that movie had come out yet when this book was put together so this is a db4 so it’s not the exact same as the james bond car which was a couple years newer a db5 but it’s certainly very similar you can certainly see that james bond style there’s a sports racing two-seater aston martin here’s another british brand that i don’t believe was ever imported to the us so you little utility vehicle the astra the two cylinder with 15 horsepower and here’s the classic austin from australia so i guess that’s austin australia so that’s a variant and they make one car the lancer in sydney australia and here’s austin the austin we know more the austin great britain from birmingham england now most these austin passenger cars i should say larger saloons saloon cars were not imported into the us but we’ll see other austin cars in this book that were imported into the us this is an austin gypsy which looks a lot like a rover to me and speaking of those austin cars that were imported here is austin healey great britain part of the austin motor company this is the awesome healy sprite of 1959 which was known as the bug-eye sprite i don’t believe that they reference it that way in this book but that’s certainly what we colloquially called it you can see that bug eye headlight configuration and here’s one of my favorite all-time cars the austin healey 106 was the version at this time in 1959 so earlier austin healeys were the big healeys known as the big healeys these are sports cars the uh earlier ones were there was the 104 before this that was uh unfortunately they only have this one photo of the heli so it’s a little hard to get all the dimensions but uh the 104s had a so much shorter nose they had a four cylinder engine these 106s then came out and then after this they uh started calling the car the 3000 and that went up until 1967. i believe was the last models and these were imported into the u.s it had a this was one of the first affordable 100 mile an hour cars i think affordable was the word they uses i don’t remember what under x amount of dollars and 100 miles an hour it had 100 horsepower in a small relatively small car it’s one of my favorite cars and here’s auto union from germany that’s a 1959 model auto union 1000 sp 2 seater coupe or coupe a 55 horsepower a couple of other auto unions from 1959 and here’s bentley this is another car we know in the u.s it’s a great britain bentley motor is limited london england i’ll read that first paragraph a well-known designer of engines in the first world war w.o bentley produced his first 3-liter cars in time to participate in the tt races of 1922 where they swept their way into second fourth and fifth places they don’t show what that race car looked like here you can see that’s a four-door saloon car kind of car with a limo driver most often they sometimes are mistaken for rolls-royces as well but it’s a different car there’s a cool drop head coupe bentley continental park ward drop head coop here’s a berkeley another british car great brenton bed for sure england they’ve got a twosome and a foursome that berkeley offers all right here’s another brand bmw of germany bearish motor in work munich germany at this time the bmw’s consisted of a type 501 a limousine a couple of different limousine models and a convertible type 507 or type 503 yeah okay so 507 i guess is the coupe and 503 is the convertible so that looks like the kind of car that would haul a german general around and this one is this is the type 503 convertible there and then here’s a 507 coupe v8 three liter v8 150 horsepower that’s a pretty cool car and here’s a borg ward germany isabella saloon isabella ts saloon kind of a large family car and this is bristol great britain it’s the car division of the bristol airplane company that’s a bristol type 406 saloon 6 cylinder with 100 horsepower 105. and here we’ve got a bugatti this is from france the current models the 101 coach four-door berlin two-door cabriolet look at that thing the bugatti 101 coach not some car here we get to our first american car where i was talking about those fins and this one is buick buick motor division of general motors michigan usa here we have a buick sabre four-door you can see those huge fins back there and kind of this a lot of chrome on these big wide cars of that day of that era here’s a buick le saber four-door hardtop again there’s those giant fins you can see the big wide styling of this period for the american cars anyway look at that thing my buick electra that thing is wide here we have another american car cadillac cadillac motor division general motors michigan usa detroit michigan henry leland as founder of the cadillac company produced the first model in 1902 and it had a horizontal single cylinder engine of seven horsepower it was chain driven and exceedingly popular until it’s just discontinuant in 1909 when cadillac became a division of general motors current models of fleetwood 60 series 62 series coupe 75 series 8 passenger sedan well that’s a big sedan an 8 passenger limousine el dorado brome a custom sedan here’s a fleetwood 60 special again cadillac really adopted those fins now in subsequent years when most other cars had started to drop the fins or at least shrink them and ultimately drop them cadillac kept those fins longer cadillac still had fins at least remnants of fins even into the early 70s but by then most other cars if not all other american cars had dropped the fin idea but you can see this is peak fin right there that’s a lot of fin the 62 series coupe these calls are cars are all 1959. there’s a sedan deville and another american car maker chevrolet you can see the chevrolet bowtie logo there detroit michigan louis chevrolet was a racing driver who designed and produced his first automobile for the public in 1912 and in that same year bought the little company in 1913 therefore the six cylinder model c and little six chevrolets were offered together with the little four at the end of the same year the little six was abandoned but the model c was continued until 1915. let’s see what chevrolets we have in this book and this year they had a biscayne a bel air an impala so that impeller had appeared by then the corvette the station wagon various versions here’s the chevrolet bel air four-door that’s a familiar car again fins here’s the the 59 impala gotta like a palace that one’s a convertible even if it is a 59 you still gotta like those in palace and unfortunately they don’t have a picture of the corvette but they do have this chevrolet nomad can get a six cylinder or v8 all the way up to 250 horsepower with fuel injection overweight 318 horsepower well in 1959 315 horsepower another american maker chrysler michigan usa the chrysler was introduced in 1924 called the 70 the first model had four-wheel hydraulic brakes an oil filter and an air cleaner in these early cars oil filters weren’t weren’t a thing and in the 50s it started to be an option it wasn’t standard equipment even though it had been invented and used in some cars it wasn’t standard yet you get the oil filter option here’s a oh did i skip a page no okay so here’s the chrysler windsor two-door hard top that’s again big fins big wide car here’s the chrysler new yorker or four-door hardtop that’s their big luxury car well all the chryslers are luxury cars i guess here’s a little citron from france current models in 1959 are the two cv type and a convertible saloon a prestige saloon so these little two cvs are just classic citron i mean they have you can definitely go study about those they have all kinds of stories about those things but i mean they are they shipped a lot of those cars and they um they’re used by a lot of people and loved by a lot of people despite a few flaws which you can look up or read about here’s another citron four cylinder two liter 66 horsepower they’re pretty streamlined for 1959 these cars had air suspension these larger citrons so when you see these cars parked they’d be sometimes squished down on their axles then they’d start up and pump their bags up here’s another american car maker continental which is a division of ford motor company here’s the mark iv limousine kind of strange headlight configuration here’s a car daff from holland again a car i don’t think was imported into the us a two-door saloon the daft deluxe saloon 2 cylinder 590 cc 22 horsepower there’s daimler of great britain not to be confused with time-larving of uh germany it’s a different car the daimler motor syndicate was formed in 1893 and in 1896 the daimler motor company limited was registered so um you’ll see a couple of saloons and limousines here it’s a classic daimler three and a half liter 104 saloon here’s a 3.8 liter majestic saloon here’s a four and a half liter limousine now that definitely looks like a car that might carry around a diplomat in england there’s another limousine here’s db of france current model is the db sport coupe two-cylinder 850 cc 56 horsepower some of these cars you may have never seen before here’s a delo of great britain this car maker was post-war the first car to be produced by this company appeared in 1947. they were competition sports models consisting of modification to existing cars to meet the revival of interest in trial events so the only model in 1959 was the mark six sports and that’s it it looks rather stark it’s got a four cylinder ford with 36 horsepower interesting little car dello of england and here’s desoto a division of the chrysler court there’s a four-door sportsman hard top there was a lot of consolidation of these uh various american sub uh divisions of these larger car companies over the years and you can kind of see why because there’s a lot of duplication of some very similar kind of cars where these different divisions were almost competing too much with their their brother and sister divisions with almost the same car so a lot of these brands have kind of gone away over time even even though the chrysler corp still exists although it’s changed hands a number of times another station wagon that top one is the firefly two-door sportsman hardtop big fins and here’s dodge the united states detroit michigan in 1915 john and horace dodge produced the first car of their new company then known as dodge brothers it was a simple design an open model and had a 35 horsepower 4-cylinder engine it was the first passenger car with an all-steel body and was continued until 1928 when the firm became a division of the chrysler corporation current models in 1959 were the king’s way the kingsway deluxe kingsway custom the lancer the coronet the royal custom royal and station wagons so here’s a custom royal lancer four-door hardtop look at the size of that thing does it tell you the weight on that car it had to weigh quite a lot turning circle 43 0.7 feet 18 feet 1 inch one and two fifths inch what an odd measurement 3405 horsepower up to an optional engine a v8 that big car a lancer convertible coupe dodge sierra station wagon okay here’s another maker set’s gone or division edsel the edsel division of the ford motor company dearborn michigan usa models itself models or two and four-door sedans of the ranger the corsair the villager villager was six and nine passenger station wagons so you can see this edsel front end i think this was one of these studies i think uh engineers and designer car designers used insole as a study for many years i guess this they say this car was sort of designed by committee and it was supposed to be the you know ticked all the boxes it’s supposed to make everybody be the perfect car and that’s how you kind of ended up with this funky design that’s the corsair four-door and here’s the station wagon the villager station wagon the faisal vega in france we have a sports coupe and a four-door saloon and here’s the sports coupe facil vega hk 500 sports coupe i guess let me know in the comments if you’ve seen some of these rare cars not quite common cars that are referenced in this book there’s an interesting little car fair thorpe buckinghamshire england current models of 1959 where the ato atomoda it’s a coupe the electron and the electron miner sports there’s the little coupe two cylinders 646 cc 35 horsepower here’s the electron sports four cylinder 1098 cc and 84 horsepower pretty peppy for the day low wide plastic bodied car and here’s the ferrari modena italy the cars at the time were the 250 gp sorry gt 250 gt of course and the 250 testarossa here’s the gt cabriolet v12 3 liter v12 with 240 horsepower beautiful car here’s the uh 250 gt berlinetta and the 250 testarossa sports racing two-seater look at that thing 300 horsepower b12 bet that engine purred here’s fiat it’s italian turin italy at this time the models were the 500 the 600 the 1100 1200 1400 b and 1900b so this fiat 500 is of course just iconic italian car you still see these things all over especially in italy but and throughout the rest of europe as well you still see them but especially italy just an absolute classic two cylinder 479 cc and 16 and a half horsepower you know you see these driving around four people crammed in there it’s a four seater there’s the 600 it says it’s a convertible but i guess they count that rollback top as a convertible top here’s the larger fiat 1100 saloon and here’s a cool one the fiat 1200 spider 1959 spider roadster [Applause] and here we are to ford sorry this is ford canada so they separate that out ontario canada toronto ontario canada and in canada the models they had were the meteor niagara meteor renew meteor station wagon monarch lucerne monarch richly monarch spectra okay so there’s the fords that were made in canada there’s a monarch two-door hard top it’s a big car for two doors 345 horsepower a 430 cubic inch v8 and here’s for germany for germany had the tennis 12m the tennis 12 15 m the tana 17m so they were little sedans i think i’ve seen many of those before and here’s ford great britain the ford organization in england goes back a good deal further than 1928 when the present company was established for it was in 1904 that the first ford car arrived from the united states the cars were handled by agencies until 1911 when the ford motor company england limited was formed with works in manchester so here’s the english boards of the day the popular two-seat saloon angla anglia saloon deluxe saloon the prefect saloon escort estate car the squire estate car the console saloon deluxe convertible zephyr saloon zodiac saloon convertible state car so here’s the ford popular two-door sedan here’s the anglia deluxe saloon some more english boards of the day there’s a zodiac convertible and one thing about these little cars now this is i don’t think the exact model but a variation of this these english boards is often used in uh drag racing or was uh used in drag race and you still see them but um you know they use that body type for that body to build drag cars you may have seen those before so you may recognize that style in a drag racing car and here’s ford of the united states of america dearborn michigan usa and at this time the current models were the custom 300 tudor and four-door sedans the fairlane the fairlane 500 the galaxy thunderbird station wagon and the number of station wagons here’s the ford fairlane 500 club victoria this one is uh you know quite a car to restore you see some of these around this ford fairlane 500 skyliner retractable hardtop so yeah the whole hard top goes back into the trunk it has a hard top i mean sort of similar to this hardtop car and that whole hard top this trunk opens up and this whole the whole hardtop goes back into that trunk area here’s the uh country sedan station wagon and there’s the they do have a convertible here so here’s the convertible i mean sorry the thunderbird hard top they do have a thunderbird v8 352 or 430 cubic inch 300 or 350 horsepower the 59 thunderbird hardtop and here we have fraser nash of great britain see what those look like current models the continental and the sebring so there’s the continental gran turismo coupe here we have a cute little guy the frisky of great britain the current models are the frisky sport and the frisky sprint so this is the frisky sport coupe 2 cylinders 324 cc 15 horsepower curb weight 745 pounds some car the frisky oh and there’s the competition two-seater three-cylinder 492 cc 34 horsepower there’s the actually i think i’ll stop at the after a through f on this video and uh we’ll pick it up another future video with the gill of great britain so we might be roughly halfway through so i hope you found this video of the observer’s book of automobiles relaxing and thanks for watching i’ll see you soon bye bye .

2.32 hey folks
2.32 in this video
2.32 we&;re uh
2.32 back to the subject of cars again
2.32 with this little observer&;s book of
2.32 automobiles
2.32 i&;ve been um
2.32 procrastinating about making
2.32 a video on this book
2.32 because i loved it so much
2.32 when i was a kid
2.32 it&;s kind of personal
2.32 kind of
2.32 gives me a lot more anxiety so bear with
2.32 me
2.32 i know i could never get anyone else to
2.32 love this book and i could never do do
2.32 it justice but
2.32 but
2.32 hopefully i can make it somewhat
2.32 interesting and
2.32 relaxing for you
2.32 i i did a little research on these
2.32 observer books for this video
2.32 i&;ve
2.32 i&;ve had this video i&;m sorry
2.32 i&;ve had this book
2.32 for
2.32 a long time
2.32 but i didn&;t really know a lot about the
2.32 series
2.32 and so i i looked up a little bit so
2.32 these little observers books were
2.32 published in the uk
2.32 and intended for for children
2.32 they covered various topics
2.32 the first one
2.32 was in 1937
2.32 on british birds
2.32 there are over 800
2.32 variations of these little
2.32 observer books
2.32 going all the way into the 1980s
2.32 the first ones
2.32 tended to focus on nature
2.32 but later they branched out to other
2.32 subjects like this
2.32 automobiles version
2.32 the first of these automobiles
2.32 observers was 1955.
2.32 and this is the fifth edition 1959.
2.32 when i got this book
2.32 as a kid
2.32 it was already old
2.32 i don&;t know exactly when something
2.32 transforms from old to uh vintage
2.32 but when when i got this book it was
2.32 simply old
2.32 my dad probably picked it up at a garage
2.32 sale or a thrift store
2.32 my dad banted himself a
2.32 collector
2.32 with a fine eye for good deals
2.32 he often said things like
2.32 that&;s going to be worth a lot of money
2.32 someday
2.32 well this little book&;s not worth a lot
2.32 but that&;s okay
2.32 that&;s not why i keep it
2.32 as i noted this this one is 1959.
2.32 even
2.32 as a kid i had already formed some
2.32 opinions about cars
2.32 my wife
2.32 was also from a car family and she
2.32 always always jokes that uh
2.32 there&;s pennzoil in our in our veins
2.32 but i had formed opinions even as a kid
2.32 and
2.32 i was not a huge fan of
2.32 1959
2.32 american cars
2.32 in the in the 50s
2.32 particularly the second part
2.32 of the decade
2.32 finns became popular in america
2.32 and this reached its height in 1959
2.32 it was peak fin
2.32 the cars were really wide
2.32 with huge fins
2.32 and to be
2.32 honest as a kid i thought they were kind
2.32 of ugly and ridiculous
2.32 i have more respect for them now
2.32 but even though i was not a huge fan of
2.32 the 1959 american cars at the time
2.32 i still loved this book as a kid
2.32 i uh i devoured it
2.32 i read and re-read this book over the
2.32 years
2.32 each time seeing new things i hadn&;t
2.32 seen before with a new perspective
2.32 even later when i started getting real
2.32 cars
2.32 i might turn back to this book
2.32 to look for insights
2.32 i mean over the years i have owned a few
2.32 cars or certainly since
2.32 most the brands of the world are in this
2.32 book certainly brands of cars that are
2.32 in this book
2.32 and this is this is from the uk and
2.32 is international in nature so
2.32 it covers cars from all over the world
2.32 and car makers from all over the world
2.32 and so the american cars are really a
2.32 relatively small part of it
2.32 which at the time opened up a new world
2.32 for me
2.32 um
2.32 to a degree i&;d obviously seen other
2.32 than american cars but this book showed
2.32 me all kinds of new
2.32 makers and and cars i hadn&;t seen before
2.32 or i hadn&;t even heard of before in some
2.32 cases
2.32 um
2.32 what we used to call foreign cars back
2.32 in the day
2.32 now i&;m a little nervous
2.32 handling
2.32 this book because it is a bit fragile
2.32 it would have had a paper jacket
2.32 when it was new
2.32 but i never saw that
2.32 by the time
2.32 i got this book that jacket was long
2.32 gone
2.32 so it wasn&;t there when i got the book
2.32 you can see it&;s a hardback book
2.32 small
2.32 pocket sized you could say
2.32 and there&;s some damage
2.32 on the cover in spots
2.32 there&;s also some water damage
2.32 on the book pages themselves in some
2.32 places
2.32 but what i&;m most worried about is the
2.32 binding
2.32 you know as i flip through the pages
2.32 so
2.32 this book has a forward
2.32 by sir sterling moss
2.32 he was a
2.32 legendary and and beloved
2.32 british
2.32 racing driver
2.32 and
2.32 the years just before this book he had
2.32 finished in second place for these four
2.32 years 55 56 57 58 in the
2.32 formula one championship
2.32 in 59
2.32 his hopes for winning were were dashed
2.32 in the final race of the year
2.32 in florida when
2.32 when his car let him down
2.32 sterling moss just recently died a
2.32 couple years ago at the age of 90.
2.32 i&;m gonna oh i&;m not gonna i&;m probably
2.32 not gonna read a lot of these these
2.32 pages in this book
2.32 i mean i guess we&;ll see how it goes but
2.32 i am gonna read this forward
2.32 by sterling moss
2.32 at a time when the prestige of british
2.32 cars and drivers has never been higher
2.32 i am very pleased to have been asked to
2.32 write the forward to this
2.32 the latest edition
2.32 of the observer&;s book of automobiles
2.32 since the automobile first appeared
2.32 before an amazed and sometimes
2.32 antagonistic world
2.32 its shape and mechanical configuration
2.32 have changed many times
2.32 to arrive at the car we know today
2.32 with its flowing lines powerful engine
2.32 automatic transmission and reliable
2.32 brakes
2.32 in this compact little volume the editor
2.32 is contrived to present
2.32 the more prominent and interesting of
2.32 the world&;s cars in a non-technical
2.32 manner
2.32 understandable even to the youngest
2.32 enthusiast
2.32 it is interesting to be able to compare
2.32 the cars of this country with those of
2.32 the usa
2.32 france germany
2.32 the ussr and even japan
2.32 by merely turning a page
2.32 or two instead of thumbing through a
2.32 pile of assorted magazines and leaflets
2.32 the idea behind the book is to enable
2.32 the reader to learn
2.32 what the current products of the world&;s
2.32 manufacturers look like
2.32 and what their vital statistics are
2.32 in this object
2.32 i think
2.32 that the editor has succeeded admirably
2.32 it is a satisfying experience to be able
2.32 to recognize the old
2.32 volga or tatra
2.32 that one may see and then turn up a
2.32 complete set of details on the car
2.32 it is good to see also that sports cars
2.32 are featured
2.32 prominently for there is a great
2.32 interest in this type of car
2.32 especially in america
2.32 and it was the little mg which did so
2.32 much to make the new world sports car
2.32 conscious
2.32 to further the prestige british cars in
2.32 the markets of the world
2.32 some of the more potent bodies such as
2.32 the testerosa ferrari are included also
2.32 for their details are of interest
2.32 to every enthusiast
2.32 i am sure that this book will find a
2.32 place on the bookshelf of every car fan
2.32 and will no doubt be used to help settle
2.32 those many arguments which always seem
2.32 to arise when enthusiasts of any type
2.32 get together
2.32 sterling moss
2.32 it&;s got a little brief history
2.32 the 1885 benz three-wheeled car
2.32 now the photographs in this
2.32 book
2.32 are what are not called halftones
2.32 so this is printed black ink on this
2.32 slightly glossy paper
2.32 and so there&;s no process for color
2.32 so these halftone images if you were to
2.32 look at them with a microscope or
2.32 perhaps even just a good magnifying
2.32 glass
2.32 you would see that they&;re just dots
2.32 it&;s all black there&;s no gray ink being
2.32 printed on this page
2.32 all the ink is one color black
2.32 so all these different shades we see are
2.32 an illusion
2.32 created by the dots
2.32 of the halftone
2.32 and of course this book is pretty small
2.32 so
2.32 it&;s another challenge kind of showing
2.32 it because um
2.32 it&;s kind of hard to get it in frame and
2.32 to really see
2.32 you know the kind of details of some of
2.32 these photos
2.32 and it&;s an a to z book
2.32 so when it starts when we start into
2.32 look at that thing
2.32 this says 19 question mark question mark
2.32 the turbo car of the future
2.32 this model made to
2.32 2 or 3 8 scale i should say
2.32 was designed by egm wilkes
2.32 pool
2.32 pj ashmore as a rear mounted gas turbine
2.32 car for the festival of britain 1951.
2.32 so that was their depiction of what a
2.32 car of the future would would look like
2.32 i mean i guess they got a few things
2.32 right
2.32 and this goes through the years of
2.32 different
2.32 attributes as cars evolved
2.32 and of course because this book is 1959
2.32 this list of things ends
2.32 in 1959
2.32 and here&;s a whole section on
2.32 how an automobile works
2.32 and as i said these books were intended
2.32 for children
2.32 and their objective was to spark some
2.32 interest in a given subject
2.32 and i i&;ll say that certainly worked on
2.32 me now i was already interested in cars
2.32 but
2.32 i mean this was just uh
2.32 accelerated that
2.32 this has
2.32 a lot of information about some of the
2.32 main components of a car and
2.32 this is how an automobile works
2.32 you know
2.32 i mean i learned
2.32 this is this these diagrams are showing
2.32 the operation of a four-stroke engine or
2.32 at least some of the main
2.32 aspects of that
2.32 you know and i i learned even as a
2.32 little kid
2.32 this this four-stroke engine as well as
2.32 two-stroke and the differences
2.32 and uh
2.32 i learned that very young
2.32 i don&;t even know if most kids ever
2.32 learned that these days
2.32 so even though this book is for kids i
2.32 mean it goes into some detail i mean
2.32 it&;s certainly not going to be a
2.32 mechanics book for how to repair a
2.32 certain car but it has a lot of
2.32 information
2.32 different kinds of engines
2.32 v f head
2.32 l head
2.32 some technologies you don&;t see very
2.32 often a puppet valve
2.32 but as i said this is an a to z book
2.32 so uh
2.32 i&;ll just go through it in that order i
2.32 suppose rather than flip around
2.32 and uh there&;s so many i obviously
2.32 unlikely to get through them all in in
2.32 one video so
2.32 we&;ll see how far we get
2.32 in this video
2.32 but here&;s ac
2.32 i might read the first paragraph the ac
2.32 company commenced operation with a small
2.32 three-wheeled commercial vehicle known
2.32 as the auto carrier
2.32 not making its first passenger model the
2.32 ac tri-car
2.32 with a single cylinder air cooled engine
2.32 until 1909.
2.32 so ac is great britain
2.32 is the manufacturer ac car is limited
2.32 thames denton surrey england
2.32 so
2.32 you may recognize this car less from the
2.32 ac but later the ac
2.32 an ac car
2.32 was used for
2.32 the shelby cobra
2.32 it was called the ac cobra now that
2.32 didn&;t exist yet
2.32 at the time of this book but uh
2.32 it um
2.32 that was might be one reason why you
2.32 might recognize these cars
2.32 and you can see there&;s a fair bit of
2.32 info on every little car and horsepower
2.32 and specifications like that
2.32 and they usually show at least a few
2.32 models produced by that maker
2.32 so here&;s alpha romeo
2.32 this is italian so italy
2.32 sa alpha romeo yeah marco opio
2.32 trillano 33 miyan italy
2.32 milan editing italy
2.32 but this lists the current models
2.32 1959 the julietta the berlina
2.32 paloche coupe
2.32 spider below j
2.32 super saloon
2.32 berlina spider
2.32 and then
2.32 as as i know and it&;ll show a few
2.32 different versions
2.32 so here&;s a sprint veloce 1959
2.32 these alphas are cool cars these old
2.32 outfits
2.32 i think at the time i got this book i
2.32 barely
2.32 barely knew what an alpha was
2.32 here&;s a julieta spider
2.32 spider below j
2.32 that&;s a really cool car
2.32 these alphas
2.32 all the way from these years and even a
2.32 little before all the way going up into
2.32 the 70s
2.32 had basically the same engine a
2.32 little twin cam
2.32 four cylinders
2.32 and they changed cubic inches or
2.32 or liters over the years they changed
2.32 size but they uh
2.32 they basically all use the same same
2.32 main engine
2.32 a couple more outfits
2.32 and hills here&;s an ollard i don&;t think
2.32 that car is from great britain i don&;t
2.32 think those cars were
2.32 imported into the us
2.32 so if we see any of these they would
2.32 have been you know brought over special
2.32 the allard motor company
2.32 london england
2.32 you can see a couple of those alerts
2.32 a couple sports cars a sport coupe
2.32 grand tree small coop
2.32 or as we say in england the coupe
2.32 [Applause]
2.32 here&;s another british car the alves
2.32 and likewise i don&;t believe this car
2.32 was imported into the us
2.32 generally so any any
2.32 model you&;d see here in the us would be
2.32 would have been brought in separately i
2.32 can see that binding is
2.32 iffy
2.32 scaring me a little here&;s another
2.32 car
2.32 maker from great britain
2.32 armstrong sidley
2.32 it&;s a large saloon car that&;s like
2.32 refer to them in england
2.32 looks like it was kind of a competitor
2.32 with uh rolls-royce
2.32 here&;s a french car andronde
2.32 france paris france
2.32 again i don&;t think these cars were
2.32 imported into the us
2.32 so again as i noted before i mean this
2.32 book exposed me to all kinds of cars
2.32 around them made around the world that
2.32 you know you just didn&;t see in the
2.32 states
2.32 you know and you certainly saw a big
2.32 contrast between the huge american cars
2.32 of this time
2.32 in these smaller
2.32 cars of europe and great britain
2.32 and uh you know that&;s true today but
2.32 perhaps to a somewhat lesser degree but
2.32 you
2.32 generally don&;t see
2.32 large cars as much
2.32 in europe
2.32 or particularly the uk with
2.32 especially in around london
2.32 so here&;s aston martin now that
2.32 obviously is a brand that was imported
2.32 and continues to be imported into the us
2.32 and we basically got
2.32 we basically got the db4 the james bond
2.32 car right here
2.32 now
2.32 i don&;t believe that movie had come out
2.32 yet
2.32 when this book was put together
2.32 so
2.32 this is a db4
2.32 so
2.32 it&;s not
2.32 the exact same as the james bond car
2.32 which was a couple years newer a db5
2.32 but it&;s certainly very similar
2.32 you can certainly see that james bond
2.32 style
2.32 there&;s a sports racing two-seater aston
2.32 martin
2.32 here&;s another british brand
2.32 that
2.32 i don&;t believe was ever imported to the
2.32 us
2.32 so you little utility vehicle the astra
2.32 the two cylinder
2.32 with 15 horsepower
2.32 and here&;s the classic austin
2.32 from australia
2.32 so i guess that&;s austin australia so
2.32 that&;s a variant and they make one car
2.32 the lancer
2.32 in sydney australia
2.32 and here&;s austin the austin we know
2.32 more the austin great britain
2.32 from
2.32 birmingham england
2.32 now most these austin passenger cars i
2.32 should say larger saloons saloon cars
2.32 were not imported into the us
2.32 but we&;ll see other austin cars in this
2.32 book that were imported into the us
2.32 this is an austin gypsy which looks a
2.32 lot like a rover to me
2.32 and speaking of those austin cars that
2.32 were imported here is
2.32 austin healey great britain
2.32 part of the austin motor company
2.32 this is the awesome healy sprite of 1959
2.32 which was known as the
2.32 bug-eye sprite
2.32 i don&;t believe that they reference it
2.32 that way in this book but that&;s
2.32 certainly what we colloquially called it
2.32 you can see that bug eye headlight
2.32 configuration
2.32 and here&;s one of my favorite all-time
2.32 cars
2.32 the austin healey 106 was the
2.32 version at this time
2.32 in 1959 so
2.32 earlier austin healeys were
2.32 the big healeys
2.32 known as the big healeys these are
2.32 sports cars
2.32 the uh
2.32 earlier ones were there was the
2.32 104 before this that was uh
2.32 unfortunately they only have this one
2.32 photo of the heli so it&;s a little
2.32 hard to get all the dimensions but uh
2.32 the 104s had a so much shorter nose they
2.32 had a four cylinder engine
2.32 these 106s then came out
2.32 and then after this they uh started
2.32 calling the car the 3000
2.32 and that went up until
2.32 1967.
2.32 i believe was the last models and these
2.32 were imported into the u.s it had a
2.32 this was one of the first
2.32 affordable
2.32 100 mile an hour cars i think affordable
2.32 was
2.32 the word they uses i don&;t remember what
2.32 under x amount of dollars and
2.32 100 miles an hour
2.32 it had 100 horsepower
2.32 in a small relatively small car
2.32 it&;s one of my favorite cars
2.32 and here&;s auto union from germany
2.32 that&;s a 1959 model auto union 1000 sp 2
2.32 seater coupe or coupe a
2.32 55 horsepower
2.32 a couple of other auto unions
2.32 from
2.32 1959 and here&;s bentley this is another
2.32 car we know in the u.s
2.32 it&;s a great britain
2.32 bentley motor is limited
2.32 london england
2.32 i&;ll read that first paragraph a
2.32 well-known designer
2.32 of engines in the first world war w.o
2.32 bentley produced his first 3-liter cars
2.32 in time
2.32 to participate in the tt races of 1922
2.32 where they swept their way
2.32 into second
2.32 fourth and fifth places
2.32 they don&;t show what that race car
2.32 looked like here you can see that&;s a
2.32 four-door saloon car
2.32 kind of car
2.32 with a limo driver most often
2.32 they sometimes are mistaken for
2.32 rolls-royces as well
2.32 but it&;s a different car
2.32 there&;s a cool
2.32 drop head coupe bentley continental park
2.32 ward drop head coop
2.32 here&;s a berkeley another british car
2.32 great brenton
2.32 bed for sure england
2.32 they&;ve got a twosome
2.32 and a foursome
2.32 that berkeley offers
2.32 all right here&;s another brand
2.32 bmw of germany
2.32 bearish motor in work
2.32 munich germany
2.32 at this time the bmw&;s consisted of a
2.32 type 501
2.32 a limousine
2.32 a couple of different limousine models
2.32 and a convertible type 507
2.32 or type 503
2.32 yeah okay so 507 i guess is the coupe
2.32 and 503 is the
2.32 convertible
2.32 so that looks like the kind of car that
2.32 would haul a german general around
2.32 and this one is this is the type 503
2.32 convertible there
2.32 and then here&;s a 507 coupe
2.32 v8
2.32 three liter v8
2.32 150 horsepower
2.32 that&;s a pretty cool car
2.32 and here&;s a
2.32 borg ward
2.32 germany
2.32 isabella saloon isabella ts saloon
2.32 kind of a large family car
2.32 and this is bristol
2.32 great britain
2.32 it&;s the car division of the bristol
2.32 airplane company
2.32 that&;s a bristol type 406 saloon
2.32 6 cylinder with 100 horsepower 105.
2.32 and here we&;ve got a bugatti
2.32 this is from france
2.32 the current models
2.32 the 101 coach four-door berlin two-door
2.32 cabriolet
2.32 look at that thing
2.32 the bugatti 101 coach
2.32 not some car
2.32 here we get to our first american car
2.32 where i was talking about those fins
2.32 and this one is buick
2.32 buick motor division of general motors
2.32 michigan usa
2.32 here we have a buick sabre four-door
2.32 you can see those huge fins back there
2.32 and kind of this
2.32 a lot of chrome on these big wide cars
2.32 of that day of that era
2.32 here&;s a buick le saber
2.32 four-door hardtop again there&;s those
2.32 giant fins
2.32 you can see the big wide
2.32 styling of this period
2.32 for the american cars anyway
2.32 look at that thing my buick electra that
2.32 thing is wide
2.32 here we have another american car
2.32 cadillac
2.32 cadillac motor division general motors
2.32 michigan usa
2.32 detroit michigan
2.32 henry leland as founder of the cadillac
2.32 company produced the first model in 1902
2.32 and it had a horizontal single cylinder
2.32 engine
2.32 of seven
2.32 horsepower
2.32 it was chain driven and exceedingly
2.32 popular until it&;s just discontinuant in
2.32 1909
2.32 when cadillac became a division
2.32 of general motors
2.32 current models of fleetwood 60 series 62
2.32 series coupe 75 series 8 passenger sedan
2.32 well
2.32 that&;s a big sedan
2.32 an 8 passenger limousine el dorado brome
2.32 a custom sedan here&;s a fleetwood
2.32 60 special again
2.32 cadillac
2.32 really adopted those fins
2.32 now in subsequent years when most other
2.32 cars had started to drop the fins or
2.32 at least
2.32 shrink them and ultimately drop them
2.32 cadillac kept those fins longer
2.32 cadillac still had fins
2.32 at least
2.32 remnants of fins even into the early 70s
2.32 but by then most other cars if not all
2.32 other american cars had dropped the fin
2.32 idea but you can see this is peak fin
2.32 right there that&;s a lot of fin
2.32 the 62 series coupe
2.32 these calls are cars are all 1959.
2.32 there&;s a sedan deville
2.32 and another american car maker
2.32 chevrolet
2.32 you can see the chevrolet bowtie logo
2.32 there detroit michigan
2.32 louis chevrolet was a racing driver who
2.32 designed and produced his first
2.32 automobile for the public in 1912
2.32 and in that same year bought the little
2.32 company
2.32 in 1913 therefore
2.32 the six cylinder model c and little six
2.32 chevrolets were offered together with
2.32 the little four
2.32 at the end of the same year the little
2.32 six was abandoned but the model c was
2.32 continued until 1915.
2.32 let&;s see what chevrolets we have in
2.32 this book
2.32 and this year they had a biscayne a bel
2.32 air an impala so that impeller had
2.32 appeared by then the corvette
2.32 the station wagon
2.32 various
2.32 versions
2.32 here&;s the chevrolet bel air
2.32 four-door
2.32 that&;s a familiar car again fins
2.32 here&;s the
2.32 the 59 impala
2.32 gotta like a palace that one&;s a
2.32 convertible
2.32 even if it is a 59 you still gotta like
2.32 those in palace
2.32 and unfortunately they don&;t have a
2.32 picture of
2.32 the corvette but they do have
2.32 this chevrolet nomad
2.32 can get a six cylinder or v8
2.32 all the way up to 250 horsepower with
2.32 fuel injection
2.32 overweight 318 horsepower well
2.32 in 1959
2.32 315 horsepower
2.32 another american maker chrysler
2.32 michigan usa
2.32 the chrysler was introduced in 1924
2.32 called the 70 the first model had
2.32 four-wheel hydraulic brakes
2.32 an oil filter and an air cleaner
2.32 in these early cars oil filters weren&;t
2.32 weren&;t a thing
2.32 and in the 50s it started to be an
2.32 option it wasn&;t standard equipment even
2.32 though it had been invented and used
2.32 in some cars it wasn&;t standard yet you
2.32 get the oil filter option
2.32 here&;s a oh did i skip a page
2.32 no
2.32 okay so here&;s the chrysler windsor
2.32 two-door hard top
2.32 that&;s again big fins big wide car
2.32 here&;s the chrysler new yorker or
2.32 four-door hardtop
2.32 that&;s their big luxury car well all the
2.32 chryslers are luxury cars i guess
2.32 here&;s a little citron
2.32 from france
2.32 current models in 1959 are the two cv
2.32 type
2.32 and a convertible saloon a prestige
2.32 saloon
2.32 so these little two cvs are just classic
2.32 citron i mean
2.32 they have
2.32 you can definitely go study about those
2.32 they have all kinds of stories about
2.32 those things but
2.32 i mean
2.32 they are
2.32 they shipped a lot of those cars and
2.32 they um
2.32 they&;re used by a lot of people and
2.32 loved by a lot of people
2.32 despite a few flaws which you can look
2.32 up
2.32 or read about
2.32 here&;s another citron
2.32 four cylinder
2.32 two liter
2.32 66 horsepower
2.32 they&;re pretty streamlined for 1959
2.32 these cars had air suspension
2.32 these larger
2.32 citrons
2.32 so when you see these cars parked they&;d
2.32 be sometimes squished down on their
2.32 axles
2.32 then they&;d start up and pump their bags
2.32 up
2.32 here&;s another american car maker
2.32 continental
2.32 which is a division of ford motor
2.32 company
2.32 here&;s the mark iv limousine
2.32 kind of strange headlight configuration
2.32 here&;s a car
2.32 daff from holland
2.32 again a car i don&;t think was imported
2.32 into the us
2.32 a two-door saloon
2.32 the daft deluxe saloon
2.32 2 cylinder
2.32 590 cc
2.32 22 horsepower
2.32 there&;s daimler of great britain not to
2.32 be confused with time-larving of uh
2.32 germany
2.32 it&;s a different car
2.32 the daimler motor syndicate was formed
2.32 in 1893
2.32 and in 1896
2.32 the daimler motor company limited was
2.32 registered
2.32 so um you&;ll see a couple of saloons and
2.32 limousines here
2.32 it&;s a classic daimler three and a half
2.32 liter
2.32 104 saloon
2.32 here&;s a 3.8 liter majestic saloon
2.32 here&;s a four and a half liter limousine
2.32 now that definitely looks like a car
2.32 that might carry around a diplomat
2.32 in england
2.32 there&;s another limousine
2.32 here&;s db
2.32 of france
2.32 current model is the db sport coupe
2.32 two-cylinder 850 cc
2.32 56 horsepower
2.32 some of these cars you may have never
2.32 seen before
2.32 here&;s a delo
2.32 of great britain
2.32 this car
2.32 maker was post-war the first car to be
2.32 produced by this company appeared in
2.32 1947.
2.32 they were competition sports models
2.32 consisting of modification to existing
2.32 cars
2.32 to meet the revival of interest in
2.32 trial events
2.32 so the only model in 1959 was the mark
2.32 six sports
2.32 and that&;s it it looks rather stark
2.32 it&;s got a four cylinder ford
2.32 with 36 horsepower
2.32 interesting little car
2.32 dello of england
2.32 and here&;s desoto
2.32 a division of the chrysler court
2.32 there&;s a four-door sportsman hard top
2.32 there was a lot of
2.32 consolidation of these uh
2.32 various
2.32 american sub uh divisions
2.32 of these larger car companies
2.32 over the years and
2.32 you can kind of see why because there&;s
2.32 a lot of duplication of some very
2.32 similar kind of cars where
2.32 these different
2.32 divisions were almost competing too much
2.32 with their their brother and sister
2.32 divisions
2.32 with almost the same car
2.32 so a lot of these brands have kind of
2.32 gone away over time
2.32 even even though the chrysler corp still
2.32 exists although it&;s changed hands a
2.32 number of times
2.32 another station wagon
2.32 that top one is the firefly two-door
2.32 sportsman hardtop
2.32 big fins
2.32 and here&;s dodge the united states
2.32 detroit michigan
2.32 in 1915 john and horace dodge
2.32 produced
2.32 the first car of their new company then
2.32 known as dodge brothers
2.32 it was a simple design an open model and
2.32 had a 35 horsepower 4-cylinder engine
2.32 it was the first passenger car with an
2.32 all-steel body
2.32 and was continued until 1928
2.32 when the firm became a division of the
2.32 chrysler corporation
2.32 current models in
2.32 1959 were the king&;s way
2.32 the kingsway deluxe
2.32 kingsway custom the lancer the coronet
2.32 the royal
2.32 custom royal
2.32 and station wagons
2.32 so here&;s a custom royal lancer
2.32 four-door hardtop look at the size of
2.32 that thing
2.32 does it tell you the weight on that car
2.32 it had to weigh quite a lot
2.32 turning circle 43
2.32 0.7 feet
2.32 18 feet 1
2.32 inch one and two fifths inch what an odd
2.32 measurement
2.32 3405 horsepower up to
2.32 an optional engine a v8
2.32 that big car
2.32 a lancer convertible coupe
2.32 dodge sierra station wagon
2.32 okay here&;s another maker
2.32 set&;s gone or division edsel
2.32 the edsel division of the ford motor
2.32 company dearborn michigan
2.32 usa
2.32 models
2.32 itself models or
2.32 two and four-door sedans of the ranger
2.32 the corsair the villager
2.32 villager was six and nine passenger
2.32 station wagons
2.32 so you can see this edsel front end
2.32 i think this was one of these studies i
2.32 think uh
2.32 engineers and designer car designers
2.32 used insole as a study for many years
2.32 i guess this they say this car was sort
2.32 of designed by committee
2.32 and it was supposed to be the you know
2.32 ticked all the boxes it&;s supposed to
2.32 make everybody be the perfect car
2.32 and that&;s how you kind of ended up with
2.32 this funky design
2.32 that&;s the corsair
2.32 four-door and here&;s the station wagon
2.32 the villager station wagon
2.32 the faisal vega
2.32 in france
2.32 we have a sports coupe and a four-door
2.32 saloon
2.32 and here&;s the sports coupe
2.32 facil vega hk 500 sports coupe
2.32 i guess let me know in the comments if
2.32 you&;ve seen some of these rare cars
2.32 not quite
2.32 common cars that are
2.32 referenced in this book
2.32 there&;s an interesting little car fair
2.32 thorpe
2.32 buckinghamshire england
2.32 current models of 1959 where the
2.32 ato atomoda it&;s a coupe
2.32 the electron
2.32 and the electron miner sports
2.32 there&;s the little coupe
2.32 two cylinders
2.32 646 cc 35 horsepower
2.32 here&;s the electron sports
2.32 four cylinder
2.32 1098 cc
2.32 and 84 horsepower
2.32 pretty peppy
2.32 for the day
2.32 low wide plastic bodied car
2.32 and here&;s the ferrari
2.32 modena italy
2.32 the cars at the time were the 250 gp
2.32 sorry gt
2.32 250 gt of course
2.32 and the 250 testarossa
2.32 here&;s the gt cabriolet
2.32 v12
2.32 3 liter v12
2.32 with 240 horsepower
2.32 beautiful car
2.32 here&;s the uh
2.32 250 gt
2.32 berlinetta
2.32 and the 250 testarossa sports racing
2.32 two-seater look at that thing
2.32 300 horsepower b12
2.32 bet that engine purred
2.32 here&;s fiat it&;s italian
2.32 turin italy
2.32 at this time the models were the 500 the
2.32 600 the 1100
2.32 1200
2.32 1400 b and 1900b
2.32 so
2.32 this fiat 500 is of course just iconic
2.32 italian car
2.32 you still see these things all over
2.32 especially in italy but and throughout
2.32 the rest of europe as well
2.32 you still see them but especially italy
2.32 just an absolute classic
2.32 two cylinder 479 cc and 16 and a half
2.32 horsepower
2.32 you know you see these driving around
2.32 four people crammed in there it&;s a four
2.32 seater
2.32 there&;s the 600
2.32 it says it&;s a convertible but
2.32 i guess they count that
2.32 rollback top as a convertible top
2.32 here&;s the larger fiat 1100 saloon
2.32 and here&;s a cool one the fiat 1200
2.32 spider
2.32 1959 spider roadster
2.32 [Applause]
2.32 and here we are to ford
2.32 sorry this is ford canada so they
2.32 separate that out
2.32 ontario canada toronto ontario canada
2.32 and in canada the models they had were
2.32 the meteor niagara
2.32 meteor renew
2.32 meteor station wagon monarch lucerne
2.32 monarch richly
2.32 monarch spectra
2.32 okay
2.32 so there&;s the
2.32 fords that were made in canada
2.32 there&;s a monarch two-door hard top it&;s
2.32 a big car for two doors
2.32 345 horsepower
2.32 a 430 cubic inch
2.32 v8
2.32 and here&;s for germany
2.32 for germany had the tennis 12m the
2.32 tennis 12 15 m the tana 17m
2.32 so they were little
2.32 sedans
2.32 i think i&;ve seen many of those before
2.32 and here&;s ford great britain
2.32 the ford organization in england goes
2.32 back a good deal further than 1928 when
2.32 the present company was established
2.32 for it was in 1904 that the first ford
2.32 car arrived from the united states the
2.32 cars were handled by agencies
2.32 until 1911 when the ford motor company
2.32 england limited was formed
2.32 with works in manchester
2.32 so here&;s the english boards of the day
2.32 the popular two-seat saloon
2.32 angla
2.32 anglia
2.32 saloon deluxe saloon the prefect
2.32 saloon
2.32 escort estate car the squire estate car
2.32 the console saloon deluxe convertible
2.32 zephyr saloon
2.32 zodiac saloon convertible state car
2.32 so here&;s the ford
2.32 popular two-door sedan
2.32 here&;s the anglia deluxe saloon
2.32 some more
2.32 english boards of the day
2.32 there&;s a zodiac convertible
2.32 and one thing about these
2.32 little cars now this is i don&;t think
2.32 the exact model but
2.32 a variation of this these english boards
2.32 is often used in uh drag racing or was
2.32 uh used in drag race and you still see
2.32 them but um you know they use that body
2.32 type for that body
2.32 to build drag cars
2.32 you may have seen those before so you
2.32 may recognize that style in a drag
2.32 racing car
2.32 and here&;s ford of the united states of
2.32 america dearborn michigan usa
2.32 and at this time the current models were
2.32 the custom 300
2.32 tudor and four-door sedans
2.32 the fairlane
2.32 the fairlane 500
2.32 the galaxy
2.32 thunderbird
2.32 station wagon
2.32 and the number of station wagons
2.32 here&;s the
2.32 ford fairlane 500 club victoria
2.32 this one is uh
2.32 you know
2.32 quite a car to restore you see some of
2.32 these around this ford fairlane
2.32 500 skyliner
2.32 retractable hardtop
2.32 so yeah the whole hard top goes back
2.32 into the trunk it has a hard top i mean
2.32 sort of similar to this
2.32 hardtop car and that whole hard top
2.32 this trunk opens up
2.32 and this whole
2.32 the whole hardtop goes back into that
2.32 trunk area
2.32 here&;s the uh
2.32 country sedan
2.32 station wagon
2.32 and there&;s the they do have a
2.32 convertible here so here&;s the
2.32 convertible i mean sorry the thunderbird
2.32 hard top
2.32 they do have a thunderbird
2.32 v8 352 or
2.32 430 cubic
2.32 inch 300 or 350 horsepower
2.32 the 59
2.32 thunderbird hardtop
2.32 and here we have fraser
2.32 nash
2.32 of great britain
2.32 see what those look like
2.32 current models the continental and the
2.32 sebring
2.32 so there&;s the continental gran turismo
2.32 coupe
2.32 here we have a cute little guy
2.32 the frisky
2.32 of great britain
2.32 the current models are the frisky sport
2.32 and the frisky sprint
2.32 so this is the frisky sport coupe
2.32 2 cylinders
2.32 324
2.32 cc
2.32 15 horsepower
2.32 curb weight
2.32 745 pounds
2.32 some car
2.32 the frisky
2.32 oh and there&;s the
2.32 competition two-seater
2.32 three-cylinder 492 cc 34 horsepower
2.32 there&;s the actually
2.32 i think i&;ll stop at the after a through
2.32 f on this video
2.32 and uh
2.32 we&;ll pick it up another future video
2.32 with the gill of great britain
2.32 so
2.32 we might be
2.32 roughly halfway through
2.32 so i hope you found this video
2.32 of the observer&;s book
2.32 of automobiles
2.32 relaxing
2.32 and
2.32 thanks for watching
2.32 i&;ll see you soon
2.32 bye bye
.
