The state sent a questionnaire to vintage car owners after it considered creating so-called zero emissions zones. Joining NTD to discuss the move is Lauren Fix, an automotive expert and founder at Car Coach Reports. She says classic cars are not big polluters as most are only driven a few hundred miles a year, compared to the thousands of miles driven by modern cars for commuting or other activities.

are these classic cars big polluters actually they’re not because most people that own classic cars including myself and I have old Mustangs and an old Porsche there is no way that they pollute CU we don’t drive them enough typically between 100 and 500 miles is a lot you’ll see people taking them to cruise nights and car shows and just going out for a drive so hundreds of miles is not typical you know a lot but when you’re talking about your daily driver your average Drive is between 10 and 15,000 miles if you’re driving an older Camry but this is all a step forward for California trying to ban cars that are not electric even though their grid absolutely cannot support it well so Lauren some of the climate activists say that these classic cars don’t meet these new standards nowadays and that they’re more polluting because they’re not as efficient but at the same time the The Provident Protection Plus says that California is basically just doing this you know and ultimately to have classic cars be you know pushed out of the the big picture here so I mean is it really right for a government a state government in this particular case to determine what cars can be used well this is absolutely Gavin Newsome the governor’s uh plan and they’ve been working on this for years and there’s been a lot of push back from some of the aftermarket automotive parts manufacturing groups like SEMA and uh ax which does a big show in Vegas there’s billions of dollars in the automotive aftermarket from restoration parts to components and the largest classic car market is in California so you would actually hurt your own economy by removing the parts manufacturers the restoration shops as well as the cars themselves and the fact is these cars are worth a lot of money you see them going at auctions whether it be at Barett Jackson or the meum auctions huge money is in these cars some of these older Ferraris go as much as 3040 million and then of course there are normal cars that you can get you know under $10,000 but trying to eliminate them from the roadways is a foolish move even in England they’ve decided that this is not a wise move but in California they’re going to make lots of foolish moves like Banning motor homes the first of this year as far as Diesel and gas power really foolish moves that hurts their economy and hurts consumers and of course residents well yeah and to your point that Provident Protection Plus mentioned they said that the classic cars just aren’t driven enough to create a problem for the environment and that you have to drive these things for several years just to match the production of one new car in terms of that carbon footprint so now would a move to restrict class car use take away California’s cool car Hub status absolutely it would destroy the cool car status it would move it to Florida most likely a lot of people are moving to Florida you’re seeing a lot of cars going there a lot of restoration shops have moved there as well as North Carolina and Arizona just to avoid a Nevada as well just to avoid some of California’s ridiculous restrictions thankfully Gavin new will not be in office forever but this has happened in the past I have friends that live in Southern California that live in Orange County which is a huge car community and they said you know we just ignore it because we know that down the road that they’re not going to get very far and they always undo it but he has the way of making things happen either through executive order by using California air resources board which tends to control everything in the state because President Obama gave them more power so they also get federal funds and those federal funds which I’m hoping Doge will eliminate is what’s making them the most powerful State and one state should never control what the other 49 states say that’s in the Constitution it’s also in the Federal Papers but seems like the federal government doesn’t like to read those documents so that California air resources board was the one behind Gathering all this info and on their questionnaire they ask you what does your odometer say how many miles estimated annual mileage and the frequency and the distance of your mileages now these zero emission zones are where only zero emission cars or Vehicles can go pedestrians cyclists but will classic car owners have somewhere else to go where where they can strut their fancy cars well that’ll be a problem that means that they’re going to either have to move out of state uh or sell their vehicles which will destroy the the classic car market because a lot of collectors are in California but remember those classic car owners that spend 30 40 million dollars in a car they’ve got a lot of power and they also fund Gavin Newsome potentially getting reelected so I think you don’t want to hurt your fundraisers I think that’s a big factor as well and I think there’s going to be a lot of push back from consumers that either still drive their older car because the climate is so good or it’s the fact that they’ve invested money in their vehicles and they’re certainly not about to just get rid of their cars because Gavin Newsome or the California air resources board says to do that I think there’s going to be a lot of push back and not just them but there’s a lot of lobbyists and groups pushing against California and let’s hope that President Trump can literally defund the California resources board and all their powers against the other 49 states Lauren fix automotive expert at car coach reports thanks for coming out
