old book those of you who know mo and drag racing are probably familiar with this book we were the Ram Chargers this was done by Dr David Rockwell and published by the Society of Automotive Engineers several years ago what you may not know is just recently the book was re-released with a lot of more material in it than before so this week we’re going to take a look at this book which you can still buy from the Society of Automotive Engineers as it was just released for publication [Music] again for those of you who know drag racing history the Ram Chargers don’t need much of an introduction this was a team of Chrysler Engineers who basically rewrote the history of drag racing with their Innovations and changes they made they created the initial tunnel Rams they were the ones who figured out the altered wheelbase situation to make what became the funny cars but actually in the interest of engineering and weight [Music] transfer of course who can deny what the 426 Hemi technology has done for drag racing so for those of you who may not be familiar with the Ram Chargers this will be a fabulous introduction to what was an incredible team of drag racers who worked on the side as Chrysler [Music] Engineers I first met Dave Rockwell back at one of Frank spitt’s reunions during the 1990s and Dave had told me at that time he was working on this project now when the first edition of the book came out I was just enthused about the fact that he had been able to get so much information the truth was Dave had actually worked with the team itself during the 1960s as a young man and he had been basically involved in small jobs but the bottom line was is he had been in the inner sanctum of the areas where the Ram Chargers kept their equipment did their work and he had also been somebody who understood their mindset these were not stupid people and when I say that what I mean is that if you couldn’t really talk the engineering lingo they were not very tolerant of just general conver Sation and this is not to put them down it’s just the level of intelligence they had for me personally having not graduated from college and frankly not realizing the value of physics until I actually climbed underneath a four-link race car and looked at what needed to be done and realized I did not have the smarts to figure this out it was an honor to be friends with some of these gentlemen of course who can forget Tom Hoover The Godfather of the Hemi Mr Hoover is somebody who just understood the basic functionality of engineering but loved the challenge of eing out every bit of horsepower from it he of course Hoover was not alone in this he had Tom codington was a fuel systems guy he had Jim thoron who was a stress analysis guy Mike Buckle again the analysis all these gentlemen were busy with other jobs in the Chrysler Corporation in fact the truth was is that the factory never gave them a lot of money this team operated on whatever they could win over the weekends and while the factory engineering technology was at their disposal and their own wisdom was certainly part of the process this was not a deal where they were getting a check written to them for their racing efforts in fact in some ways they knew that if it was found out how much time they might be spending on the race program that could have meant a job ter mintion anyhow we were the Ram Chargers is published by the Society of Automotive engineers and what makes that very interesting is it reads almost like a textbook in terms of the layout and the pages except it’s all about drag racing and frankly it’s a history book it is not a technology book now they will bring up the forms of technology that we involved certainly but the history itself is a rcking narrative of drag racing and of these gentlemen’s lives as they went through through what was probably the most pivotal era in the history of factory performance meanwhile they also had a Top Fuel dragster and became notorious as being the most one of the most feared competitors out there they actually probably had more problem with drivers than they did with engine technology although there were times when they pushed the envelope in that too and in the 1970s of course they went to funny car for a while and by this time the team itself the core team at Chrysler engineering had moved on to other things but uh the Ram Chargers name remained notorious in Drag Race the new addition of this book is almost 100 Pages longer than the initial Edition had been [Music] coolest thing is the fact that due to changes in printing technology this is now able to be seen with a lot of more color illustrations inside of it in the first edition all the color was on a few pages in the rear but on this Edition there is color throughout and obviously if you’re into Top Fuel and you’re into nitromethane uh there is wonderful Recollections on running that car and how that worked one thing I think those of you who are mechanic and Klein will enjoy are the pictures of the inside of the shop I mean just remember photographer bob snake who lived in the Detroit area once stated it was easier to get into a Russian missile silo than it was to get into the Ram Charger shop so my advice is if you do not have a Affinity toward Chrysler racing I would still get this book I think again from a technical standpoint it will give you a lot of information on engineering you might not have known before but again it’s written in Pros that is much more of a telling of the tale as opposed to Simply dry technical [Music] data but we all love the engineering of drag racing we all love to know what it takes to go fast and this has great insights into some of the brightest Minds that ever traversed a quarter mile but also have to say a big thank you goes to David Carl Peters the artist because he helped out with a number of illustrations that are just beautifully done here David also helped me out with my dick Landy book years ago and again a very gracious gentleman and the fact that his art appears here just adds to the quality of This Book And for those of you who uh enjoy a little bit of NH related Intrigue the last several pages of this in fact going through it uh there’s actually four pages of it are letters between farmer dismuke of NH and Frank Wy um the north Woodward timing Association dick Maxwell again talking about some of the some of the controversies that erupted as the factory wars were going so if I’m going to put up the here the ISBN numbers Library Congress catalog numbers
