Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: hello viewers welcome to my channel today i wanted to share a book that got me started reading a lot of automotive history and taught me about cars from all around the world the complete encyclopedia of the motor car edited by gian giorgano i first looked at this book when i was 10 or 11. the local library had it and my little brother had hauled it out he didn’t really look at it i did since he was six but i got to know a lot of auto makes from this book that i’m still familiar with today a lot of the pictures are really familiar so for me it has a lot of nostalgia this copy isn’t the library book from back then it’s a copy someone gave to me probably 10 years ago this is a great book that any automotive historian or collector should have some of the big names in the car hobby now like jay leno most certainly have a copy of this on their shelf it has a listing of supposedly every make of car in the whole world at least every make of car known of in 1973 from the everyday cars we all know to some real oddballs you’ve never heard of so let’s take a look inside hi the complete encyclopedia of motor cars 1885 to the present edited by gn giorgiano you can see here that the original date of publication for this book was 1968 and first edition 1968 reprinted 1969 twice 1970 1971 second edition 1973 reprinted 1976. 1973 is the present in this book everything goes up to that time so let’s take ourselves back in time to 1973 and see how they took a look at automotive history and how they viewed the present day the first part of it is these they call them color plates and this is where the color section of the book back in the day it was actually really expensive to make color photographs so you you only got a limited section of color where everything else would be black and white i mean nowadays i know that that has long since been uh done away with now everything’s color it’s cheap to print print books but on the very first page you see a really interesting car here this and they list each of the models just with a year and the make it doesn’t tell you anything else so 1897 leon bolle i guess is how that’s pronounced maybe here’s one that really is quite interesting 1953 jawet is what it says but this is a interesting british car that was built i believe they built these in yorkshire and the company went out of business right about that time because of that car it was very limited production and it was a unitary construction i believe back when i saw this i didn’t know anything about it but you’ll notice how they’re given a front and rear view of this i think it’s the only car in this color section that gets two pictures dedicated to it so uh somebody was was pretty interested and there’s a little tear in that page here’s another couple of real famous cars the this is the mini obviously it is not labeled mini it says 1961 austin if you can see that 1961 austin is how that’s labeled and below that is a 1959 bmw of course we know that is the 507. here’s a picture i really loved when i was a kid bmw is that a an italian design built by bmw when this car here nearly bankrupted them they saved themselves by building these bubble cars another two-page spread with a volvo i mean they could have found a better car to have a two-page spread than a lousy volvo but okay um and now we’re getting to kind of the like the present day so this is one of the few japanese k cars sold in america the honda z i believe i think it says it’s a z right there on the little badge that’s kind of neat of course the the infamous volkswagen 1973 so that was a brand new car at the time this book was was printed the last there’s one last picture here that i definitely want you to see the 1973 oldsmobile an oldsmobile omega i didn’t notice until just now looking at this it does give you more information about each of the cars in here it numbers all of them so this is number 60 so here you go number 60 1973 oldsmobile omega hatchback coupe photographed by general motors corporation so it wasn’t just some some guy taking pictures of somebody’s car was actually gm commissioned that photo not sure if those were really a hatchback though but maybe they were and it doesn’t show the hatchback so i can’t tell you anglo-american terminology i love that i get a kick out of that um english english is a language by the way so in english a bonnet american not english hood boot in american is trunk english capacity of engine called displacement actually i do use the word displacement personally quite a bit and i do use hood i’m an american obviously so um coupe deville town car who says coupe de vil anywhere anymore i think everyone just says town car even the british paraffin really kerosene uh yes there’s some some old rednecks that still say two cycle but we we say two-stroke now thanks um windscreen windshield okay fair enough but just i find that section really funny that’s just very amusing that that’s there but here’s where it all begins right uh here’s your contributors and then you start with letter a and now you have five or 600 pages of automotive history here to look at so as a 10 year old maybe 9 10 or 11 year old kid this was absolutely fascinating i think the first time i looked through this book i wasn’t so much reading it because i mean i couldn’t really read this uh as a 10 year old i this wouldn’t make any sense to me but i sure could look at pictures right and i could understand the year that that’s all i really got out of it okay so it’s a 1960 abarth great you know that it wasn’t really one of my favorite cars necessarily but there were some real favorites in here and there’s a lot of real old-timers probably 80 percent of all of the photographs in this book black and white photographs are of this kind of old nonsense you know early 20th century cars i’m personally not really interested in them very much at all not many people are these days they’re it’s they’re slowly going out of uh out of existence or just out of interest there’s fewer and fewer people that really remember riding in these that are alive today but back this remember we’re back in time we’re in 1973 so you know in 1973 as you look through here you know a 1938 adler which is a german car is you know how old is that that’s 35 year old car maybe so that’s that’s not even that old of a car a 35 year old car now is you know from the uh from the 80s the late 80s even so arrow is a make of car from czechoslovakia and this is how these are all set up depending on how important to make it is like adler’s fairly important they get a fairly large amount of text some of these are just literally like just see another make or there’s just a sentence or two about it arrow is a czechoslovakia that’s what cs actually is back this is back when pre-93 obviously when it was um czech and slovakia were one country they were communist at the time but um not necessarily uh when that car was built you know 1929 to 1947 that’s when they existed and underneath the uh the name of the make and the years that they existed is like the official name and where they were made in this case prague a 1937 arrow and on this second page here the aero miner 615 cc saloon so i believe those had like a dkw type engine layout i have another picture of one of these in a different book very obscure and unusual car and this is what makes this book really fun to look through and i’ve bookmarked several interesting pages here uh there’s some vehicles in here that you just you don’t see anywhere else except you see these odd black and white pictures often with people in the background wearing these like overcoats and stuff you know real old vintage photographs and everything looks kind of mysterious you know like from a different world when everything was black and white oh here’s another another one of these really interesting and only in this book uh ashley the ashley sportivo i actually like i like the name and i can tell now looking at it having been in a part of london before that this is certainly a british car and it’s definitely parked it’s some somewhere in london no doubt about it i wonder if it’s a one-off it says 1958-1961 fiberglass body shells and equipment so they decided to use their their fiberglass skills to build a fiberglass body car which doesn’t look all that bad actually 1172 cc i’m guessing this is a ford anglia yes it is so yeah so they took a boring ford anglia um 1200 and put a nice body on it to improve it but you can see the majority of the vehicles in here are these really old you know early 20th century types of vehicles and then the cool stuff the bizarrini 5 5300 gt i’m going to assume that’s 5.3 liter yes it even says that there 1965-1969 livorno italy if you know your history you know that bond cars were named after this guy named lawrence lawrence bond his actually name was bond they’ve been gone since like about 1973 or 74. and the current car they were making at the time of the publication of this book the brand new car was the bond bug it’s become kind of famous now there’s a lot of there’s a there’s a collector club about these uh there was one on um jeremy clarkson uh grand tour he converted a bond bug into a amphibious amphibious amphibious car that’s what i meant to say um yeah he sort of destroyed it at the same time but actually it was really cool what he did with with what they did with it uh using it as an amphibious car to break out on water speed record kind of a well-known car now bond a keep 1960s kind of and then the actual mini car 197 cc so a little two-stroke engine i think they had a front engine in those there’s a guy driving in here borg ward and there’s some really nice pictures here there’s a borg word hanza 1951 1500 i think that’s what that is the ren sport it’s very rare to see a photograph of the red sport i don’t think many of those were made very famous isabella coupe coupe and the car that put them out of business the 2.3 liter borg ward which i believe after borgwood went bankrupt 1961 that car tried to produce it in mexico they failed they went bankrupt again but uh yeah really pretty nice um coverage of borgwood there they didn’t give them much text i have to say but they gave them four pictures which is kind of nice and then you see things that kind of odd that they’re here like racing cars there were a lot of companies that made formula one cars in the day this whole book isn’t full of these pictures but for some reason this make which i can’t really pronounce has uh formula one cars or bt-8 sports racing cars uh another formula one car listed so i’m going to assume that one of the editors was a racing fan here’s one that really makes looking at a book from the 70s interesting 1972 brewbaker box apparently had despite the very very manly looking wheels on that and that’s a very 70s slotted wheel it had a volkswagen beetle i think engine or maybe it was a type 2 transporters engine but basically volkswagen mechanicals looks like just kind of an oddball here but actually the guy who designed this his name is brubaker and he’s still around and uh when he described his idea behind the design it was really interesting he was inspired by her he wanted to create a car for surfers it actually has a wooden bumper on it and he used all kinds of interesting materials and made a really interesting um one-of-a-kind design and i really do love that they that they pay respect to it in this book here 1972 to date it says i’m pretty sure that really is 1972-273 really i don’t think many of these were made maybe a dozen or so um i you’d have to correct me on that in the comments the 1956 gordon three-wheeler this vehicle and there it says here built by a subsidiary of vernon pools so is it a company that makes pools or is it i know that pools in britain is often like betting pools either a couple of guys who were in the pool business or who were betting on horses decided to build this car which has an outboard engine that according to this drives the right-hand rear wheel only by chain that’s just so tragic it was basically an open car according to this but it actually has a covering on it that i would have to say makes it look a little more substantial but how awful is that 1954 to 1958 so they made it for four years apparently um but there there you have it two-stroke single cylinder less than 200cc car we all know and love the isetta bubble car this is a 1954 is that a 236 cc coupe this is the italian version the one that was actually designed by uh eso it does explain here that this is the car that that actually started the bubble car boom way back in 1953 that’s a 1953 car design and it’s the full bubble version no sliding windows or nothing just a peel back roof i i this used to be one of my favorite cars to look at when i was a kid obviously they only made the azetta for a couple of years and then fortunately it’s it’s in the same part of the alphabet so the eso history is right below it 1962 to date although eso has been gone since i think 76 maybe 77 but they made some fantastic cars like here’s the eso grifo grifo gt coupe 1960s uh the iso lele i love that name uh really neat rad mad sports car from the 70s which was their current vehicle eso revolta is another which is like a four-door a true four-door supercar way back uh in the in the early 70s but i just had to point out the izetta in this book and here’s another favorite page of mine in this book the there’s two kaisers this insane thing which looks like a zeppelin i i don’t even know what it is but it looks huge and this is one thing about this is that there’s no people in the picture and there’s a door handle but you really can’t tell how big or small this car actually is it probably is tiny but in this picture it looks like it’s the size of a building and i always was fascinated by this it’s hideous but it’s fascinating nonetheless than the american kaiser because there’s a gentleman whose name was kaiser who was in shipbuilding as you can imagine he made a killing during the war and then after the war he was swimming in cash so he decided to start his own car company he spent a lot of money uh making his vehicles and tried to break into the market way late in 1946 and it didn’t work out for him but he did end up taking over willie’s jeep and as a result jeep sort of survived it was without him without kaiser they really wouldn’t have survived there’s the other kaiser the kaiser manhattan it’s a great name for a car i have to say and then another one of my real favorites of the 1950s the cappy cheeky yes automobiles copy barcelona the cappy was a or copy i don’t even know how you would say that it’s a three wheeler powered by a montesa motorcycle engine hispano villiers hispano so that would be the spanish failures gian giorgano is apparently credited with the photograph so 125 cc it has i i never could figure this picture out it’s shown on a street and in the background there’s another mini car that i think is kind of famous but i’ve forgotten the name of it right now you can see by the venting that it has a rear engine but if you look at the headlights you can see one of the headlights is actually external and the other one is fired in with the bodywork i can’t like from here it looks okay from this angle but i can’t just imagine what that actually would look like from from the front that must look ridiculous but it’s just it’s such an unusual car and i love the way it’s like probably red and white here or red and yellow maybe since this you know spanish flag colors perhaps klein schnitzger is here uh germany would be west germany 1950 to 1957 but there’s no picture of the kleinschnicker but there is a picture of this thing klein wolf germany 1950 to 1951 and this picture is just this guy with this horrible helmet it looks like it’s plastic um and it’s 200 cc so that would probably be the 198 cc elo or ilo engine i don’t know if the engine’s in the front or the rear it doesn’t say but yeah and it’s in in the winter um a tiny one of the tiny uh early 50s just right after the war german micro cars 1957 moshe 175 cc it’s hard to find information on these i think they started out as an actual pedal car like an actual literal pedal-powered car and moshe was this kind of bicycle i think his name was charles moshe a french bicycle inventor mechanic so to speak he made pedal cars and then he added these little tiny engines to them uh 100 cc 175 cc it’s it’s a little micro car it’s very small looks like it’s on like a path here it’s not even like a proper road 1968 mo’s this is an american a real exotic and amazing american specialty car that was made by this guy whose name was mose madison wisconsin bruce moe’s was his name these are really something else the very it’s very hard to find information on them and hardly any were made i don’t even think it says how many were made here but it says 1968 to date so apparently he was still making cars at the time that this book was printed nsu prinz or prince is how you would in english 598 cc but that’s not a two-stroke that’s a four-stroke rear-engine car and at the time they were developing the wenkel or vanco engine this had the wankel engine in the front in front-wheel drive the row 80. so these are still around i actually saw one of these for sale on ebay not long ago maybe three or four grand they wanted for it and it just wasn’t my thing but it didn’t it wasn’t even rusty they sold them here in the states and uh all over western europe really amazing car but my personal favorite though was not so much this it was always the nsu fiat wiensberg i can’t get over this i never could figure out what it was until recently that this is actually a german fiat 500 i think so the fiat 500 we all know what those are little kind of egg-shaped car or gumdrop shaped car maybe built in italy in the millions in the 50s 60s and 70s it went over to germany and the germans they designed their own body style for the fiat 500 and that’s what this is and i actually have a model of one of these i’ll have to show that at some point 1963 peel p50 49 cc single cedar coupe and it’s parked just on the side of the street i’ve always loved uh that picture the way it was just parked on the street no one has disturbed it i think until they saw jeremy clarkson drive one of these and walk through the bbc center with it in uh 2007 i think um people wouldn’t have guessed that this thing weighs like maybe a hundred pounds or you know could just take it and pick it up and just carry it away but the owner was able to leave it on the street and someone has photographed it i love these little golf cart wheels on it the side vent the door is on the opposite side so it’s really neat how you really can’t tell how you would get into it from from this picture and peugeot their current car in 1973 was the 504 which is a great car and it’s all downhill from there pujo sorry ah here’s another you know besides puma another interesting thing you learned from these encyclopedias this cube right here 1968 quasar unipower no idea what on earth the meaning of that is it’s more of a statement than anything else and it’s got these it looks like sliding doors really kind of amazing but i really love that what is it it’s got an 1100 cc where’d they put the engine 1100 cc where do they fit an engine that large and that i don’t know it’s six feet high yeah it looks it it looks definitely looks pretty tall but that’d be really neat to go for a ride in one of those it looks almost like a pokemobile doesn’t it renault yeah renault’s uh their current car of the day you have the 1100 saloon it says renault 1100 which is actually i think a renault 10 but it doesn’t say that here the current renault car of the day is this the 15 ts does that look very 70s here’s another page i marked off because it has another one of these obscure mobiles the rousey 1949 rousseau 700cc saloon i gotta say of all the channels on youtube there’s only one where you’re ever going to get some history on the rousey or any car like it made in france 1949 to 1950s probably means they made a handful it’s a light car obviously 700 cc horizontally opposed four-cylinder two-stroke engine that’s something else front-wheel drive two-door saloon is the only model with backwards opening doors and it looks awful but you know you’re never going to see that anywhere else i i don’t think i’ve ever seen um because i’m sure if you just type rousey into the internet it’d just be somebody’s name you just see a bunch of people i don’t think you’d see a picture of this awful car i’m sure the french want to forget that they even made it but you know there’s a rover i think uh one another page i’ve got marked off here toyota yeah toyota actually goes back quite a ways and when you look back in time here you almost see an american style car and this model ba and aaa 1930s and 40s toyotas look very much american and then the 1949 toyota essay that doesn’t really look american except the front end kind of does that’s kind of like a little bit of lincoln town car isn’t isn’t it but then the rest of it is kind of like that arrow miner we saw at the earlier part of the catalog so kind of like a european almost volkswagen beetle body with a lincoln front end four-cylinder engine which toyotas often were toyota’s current offerings in 1973 you have the publica 800 this cut this is a classic car now that’s probably sought after and then the toyota crown was their luxury car but the uh the trabant made by veb sox and ring automobile work zvikao which we’ll get to zwick out in a second here but yeah there’s the trabant universal i have a model of one of those too actually it’s an amazing car two-stroke so is the willam two-seater now here’s the car i really like the wolsley 1300 and then there’s the bigger wolseley and i believe in here it’ll say 19 at wolsley 1911 to date so they’re still around at the time of the printing of this book wellesley uh part of british layland yes british layland motor corporation is credited with the photograph and when you go into the back of the book i always like the z section because this is where where you get into things that i would never have heard of or never have seen anywhere else the zil the russian zil limousine the russian zim limousine the russian this limousine if you’re wondering why they’re all russian in the russian language zavolt means works so being a communist country if you set up a factory called no matter what it was called moscow works you know it would have the letter z in the acronym somewhere so z often shows up in um automobile company names in russia because it means it means works basically so that’s why they they kind of dominate the z section but then there’s two real interesting vehicles here that the zundapop janus which has a front opening door like the aceta very similar to the azetta except the rear door also opens uh i nearly bought a model of one of these in 118 scale but the reason i didn’t buy it is because the doors didn’t open like why would you want a model of a car that is famous for the front and rear of the car opening if the doors don’t open on that model so i i didn’t i didn’t buy it but this is the one i really really love the zunder 1960s zunder and i just love the color it’s just such an odd looking but neat looking car and there’s not much about it here 200 were made zunder in in argentina but yeah we’re at the back of the book now and uh the very very last entry in this book is this car right here the zwickau p70 also made by veb automobile works vikal which is uh the east german auto proprietor the same people who made the trabant this is the car that predated the turbine 1956-1959 25 000 of these were made so it’ll be plastic this vehicle and again it’s got the same type of uh almost like red and white color scheme as this car here it’s kind of like a z almost very much like a z shape in the z section of the book before you come to a glossary yeah that’s pretty much it before you get to the index where it probably just has just some personality names and probably some additional photo credits and things like that how far did we go though we went all the way to the end which was page 738 what page did it starts page 60 or so so yeah 700 pages of of automotive history this is the book that i learned about cars from but there there’s a lot of things that i discovered some of them weird nonsense like this that you know you’ll never see anywhere else and some of it just looking back in time at famous companies like volvo this is a really great book if you can get your hands on a copy of one of these it’s probably not expensive today you probably get it for below the actual price it was when it was in print which was thirty dollars you could probably get one today for for less than that on ebay or something or other but anyway i hope that you enjoyed taking a look at this book with me and uh coming down a trip down memory lane if you enjoyed this video please leave a like consider subscribing i’m fairly new to youtube i’d love to do more videos like this so so consider you know a like and subscribe at the very least a like it give me a little bit of support thank you for watching this video all the way to the end if you have and i hope to see you again soon take care .

1.199 hello viewers welcome to
1.199 my channel today i wanted to share a
1.199 book that got me started reading a lot
1.199 of automotive history and taught me
1.199 about cars from all around the world
1.199 the complete encyclopedia of the motor
1.199 car edited by gian giorgano
1.199 i first looked at this book when i was
1.199 10 or 11.
1.199 the local library had it and my little
1.199 brother had hauled it out
1.199 he didn&;t really look at it i did since
1.199 he was six
1.199 but i got to know a lot of auto makes
1.199 from this book that i&;m still familiar
1.199 with today
1.199 a lot of the pictures are really
1.199 familiar so for me it has a lot of
1.199 nostalgia
1.199 this copy isn&;t the library book from
1.199 back then it&;s a copy someone gave to me
1.199 probably
1.199 10 years ago this is a great book that
1.199 any automotive historian or collector
1.199 should have
1.199 some of the big names in the car hobby
1.199 now like jay leno
1.199 most certainly have a copy of this on
1.199 their shelf
1.199 it has a listing of supposedly every
1.199 make of car in the whole world
1.199 at least every make of car known of in
1.199 1973
1.199 from the everyday cars we all know to
1.199 some real oddballs you&;ve never heard of
1.199 so let&;s take a look inside
1.199 hi the complete encyclopedia of motor
1.199 cars
1.199 1885 to the present edited by gn
1.199 giorgiano
1.199 you can see here that the original date
1.199 of publication
1.199 for this book was 1968
1.199 and first edition 1968 reprinted 1969
1.199 twice 1970 1971
1.199 second edition 1973
1.199 reprinted 1976. 1973 is the present
1.199 in this book everything goes up to that
1.199 time so
1.199 let&;s take ourselves back in time to
1.199 1973
1.199 and see how they took a look at
1.199 automotive history
1.199 and how they viewed the present day the
1.199 first part of it
1.199 is these they call them color plates
1.199 and this is where the color section of
1.199 the book
1.199 back in the day it was actually really
1.199 expensive to make color photographs
1.199 so you you only got a limited section of
1.199 color where everything else would be
1.199 black and white i mean nowadays i know
1.199 that that
1.199 has long since been uh done away with
1.199 now everything&;s color
1.199 it&;s cheap to print print books but on
1.199 the very first page
1.199 you see a really interesting car here
1.199 this and
1.199 they list each of the models just with a
1.199 year
1.199 and the make it doesn&;t tell you
1.199 anything else so 1897
1.199 leon bolle i guess is how that&;s
1.199 pronounced maybe
1.199 here&;s one that really is quite
1.199 interesting
1.199 1953 jawet is what it says
1.199 but this is a interesting british car
1.199 that was built i believe they built
1.199 these in yorkshire
1.199 and the company went out of business
1.199 right about that time
1.199 because of that car it was very limited
1.199 production and it was a unitary
1.199 construction i believe
1.199 back when i saw this i didn&;t know
1.199 anything about it but you&;ll notice how
1.199 they&;re given
1.199 a front and rear view of this i think
1.199 it&;s the only car in this
1.199 color section that gets two pictures
1.199 dedicated to it so
1.199 uh somebody was was pretty interested
1.199 and there&;s a little tear in that page
1.199 here&;s another couple of real famous
1.199 cars the
1.199 this is the mini obviously it is not
1.199 labeled mini
1.199 it says 1961 austin if you can see that
1.199 1961 austin is how that&;s labeled and
1.199 below that
1.199 is a 1959 bmw of course we know that is
1.199 the 507.
1.199 here&;s a picture i really loved when i
1.199 was a kid bmw
1.199 is that a an italian design built by bmw
1.199 when this car here nearly bankrupted
1.199 them
1.199 they saved themselves by building these
1.199 bubble cars
1.199 another two-page spread with a volvo i
1.199 mean they could have found a better car
1.199 to have a two-page spread than a
1.199 lousy volvo but okay um and now we&;re
1.199 getting to kind of the
1.199 like the present day so this is one of
1.199 the few
1.199 japanese k cars sold in america the
1.199 honda z
1.199 i believe i think it says it&;s a z right
1.199 there on the little badge that&;s kind of
1.199 neat
1.199 of course the the infamous volkswagen
1.199 1973 so that was a brand new car at the
1.199 time
1.199 this book was was printed the last
1.199 there&;s one last picture here that i
1.199 definitely want you to see
1.199 the 1973 oldsmobile an oldsmobile omega
1.199 i didn&;t notice until just now looking
1.199 at this it does give you more
1.199 information
1.199 about each of the cars in here
1.199 it numbers all of them so this is number
1.199 60 so here you go number 60 1973
1.199 oldsmobile omega hatchback coupe
1.199 photographed by general motors
1.199 corporation so it wasn&;t just some
1.199 some guy taking pictures of somebody&;s
1.199 car was actually gm commissioned that
1.199 photo
1.199 not sure if those were really a
1.199 hatchback though but
1.199 maybe they were and it doesn&;t show the
1.199 hatchback so i can&;t tell you
1.199 anglo-american terminology i love that i
1.199 get a kick out of that
1.199 um english
1.199 english is a language by the way so in
1.199 english a bonnet
1.199 american not english hood
1.199 boot in american is trunk english
1.199 capacity of engine
1.199 called displacement actually i do use
1.199 the word displacement
1.199 personally quite a bit and i do use hood
1.199 i&;m an american obviously so
1.199 um coupe deville town car who says coupe
1.199 de vil
1.199 anywhere anymore i think everyone just
1.199 says town car even the british
1.199 paraffin really kerosene
1.199 uh yes there&;s some some old rednecks
1.199 that still say two cycle but we we say
1.199 two-stroke now thanks
1.199 um windscreen windshield okay
1.199 fair enough but just i find that section
1.199 really funny that&;s just very amusing
1.199 that that&;s there
1.199 but here&;s where it all begins right uh
1.199 here&;s your contributors and then
1.199 you start with letter a and now you have
1.199 five or 600 pages
1.199 of automotive history here to look at so
1.199 as a 10 year old maybe 9 10 or 11 year
1.199 old kid
1.199 this was absolutely fascinating
1.199 i think the first time i looked through
1.199 this book i wasn&;t so much
1.199 reading it because i mean i couldn&;t
1.199 really read this uh
1.199 as a 10 year old i this wouldn&;t make
1.199 any sense to me but i sure could look at
1.199 pictures right and i could understand
1.199 the year that that&;s all i really got
1.199 out of it okay so it&;s a 1960
1.199 abarth great you know that it wasn&;t
1.199 really one of my favorite cars
1.199 necessarily but
1.199 there were some real favorites in here
1.199 and there&;s a lot of real old-timers
1.199 probably 80 percent of all of the
1.199 photographs in this book black and white
1.199 photographs
1.199 are of this kind of old nonsense you
1.199 know
1.199 early 20th century cars i&;m personally
1.199 not really interested in them
1.199 very much at all not many people are
1.199 these days
1.199 they&;re it&;s they&;re slowly going out of
1.199 uh out of existence or just out of
1.199 interest there&;s fewer and fewer people
1.199 that really remember riding in these
1.199 that are alive today
1.199 but back this remember we&;re back in
1.199 time we&;re in 1973 so
1.199 you know in 1973 as you look through
1.199 here
1.199 you know a 1938 adler which is a german
1.199 car
1.199 is you know how old is that that&;s 35
1.199 year old car
1.199 maybe so that&;s that&;s not even that old
1.199 of a car a 35 year old car now
1.199 is you know from the uh from the 80s
1.199 the late 80s even so arrow is a make of
1.199 car from
1.199 czechoslovakia and this is how these are
1.199 all set up
1.199 depending on how important to make it is
1.199 like adler&;s fairly important they get a
1.199 fairly
1.199 large amount of text some of these are
1.199 just
1.199 literally like just see another make
1.199 or there&;s just a sentence or two about
1.199 it
1.199 arrow is a czechoslovakia that&;s what cs
1.199 actually is back this is back when
1.199 pre-93 obviously
1.199 when it was um czech and slovakia were
1.199 one country
1.199 they were communist at the time but um
1.199 not necessarily uh when that car was
1.199 built
1.199 you know 1929 to 1947 that&;s when they
1.199 existed
1.199 and underneath the uh the name
1.199 of the make and the years that they
1.199 existed is like the official name
1.199 and where they were made in this case
1.199 prague a 1937 arrow and on this
1.199 second page here the aero miner 615
1.199 cc saloon so i believe those had like a
1.199 dkw type engine layout i have another
1.199 picture of one of these in a different
1.199 book
1.199 very obscure and unusual car and this is
1.199 what makes this book
1.199 really fun to look through and i&;ve
1.199 bookmarked several interesting pages
1.199 here uh
1.199 there&;s some vehicles in here that you
1.199 just you don&;t see anywhere else except
1.199 you see these
1.199 odd black and white pictures often with
1.199 people in the background wearing these
1.199 like overcoats and stuff
1.199 you know real old vintage photographs
1.199 and everything looks kind of mysterious
1.199 you know like from a different world
1.199 when everything was black and white
1.199 oh here&;s another another one of these
1.199 really interesting
1.199 and only in this book
1.199 uh ashley the ashley sportivo i actually
1.199 like
1.199 i like the name and i can tell now
1.199 looking at it having been
1.199 in a part of london before that this is
1.199 certainly
1.199 a british car and it&;s definitely parked
1.199 it&;s some somewhere in london no doubt
1.199 about it
1.199 i wonder if it&;s a one-off it says
1.199 1958-1961
1.199 fiberglass body shells and equipment so
1.199 they decided to
1.199 use their their fiberglass skills to
1.199 build a fiberglass body car which
1.199 doesn&;t look all that bad actually 1172
1.199 cc i&;m guessing this is
1.199 a ford anglia yes it is
1.199 so yeah so they took a boring ford
1.199 anglia
1.199 um 1200 and put
1.199 a nice body on it to improve it but you
1.199 can see the majority of the vehicles in
1.199 here
1.199 are these really old you know early 20th
1.199 century
1.199 types of vehicles and then the cool
1.199 stuff the bizarrini 5
1.199 5300 gt i&;m going to assume that&;s 5.3
1.199 liter
1.199 yes it even says that there 1965-1969
1.199 livorno
1.199 italy if you know your history you know
1.199 that bond
1.199 cars were named after this guy named
1.199 lawrence lawrence bond his
1.199 actually name was bond they&;ve been gone
1.199 since like about 1973 or 74.
1.199 and the current car they were making at
1.199 the time of the publication of this book
1.199 the brand new car
1.199 was the bond bug it&;s become kind of
1.199 famous now there&;s a lot of there&;s a
1.199 there&;s a collector club about these
1.199 uh there was one on um jeremy clarkson
1.199 uh grand tour he converted a bond bug
1.199 into a
1.199 amphibious amphibious amphibious car
1.199 that&;s what i meant to say
1.199 um yeah he sort of destroyed it at the
1.199 same time but actually it was
1.199 really cool what he did with with what
1.199 they did with it
1.199 uh using it as an amphibious car to
1.199 break out
1.199 on water speed record kind of a
1.199 well-known car now
1.199 bond a keep 1960s
1.199 kind of and then the actual mini car
1.199 197 cc so a little two-stroke engine i
1.199 think they had a front engine in those
1.199 there&;s a guy driving in here
1.199 borg ward and there&;s some really nice
1.199 pictures here there&;s a borg word
1.199 hanza 1951
1.199 1500 i think that&;s what that is the ren
1.199 sport
1.199 it&;s very rare to see a photograph of
1.199 the red sport i don&;t think many of
1.199 those were made
1.199 very famous isabella coupe
1.199 coupe and the car that put them out of
1.199 business the
1.199 2.3 liter borg ward which i believe
1.199 after borgwood went bankrupt 1961
1.199 that car tried to produce it in mexico
1.199 they failed they went bankrupt again
1.199 but uh yeah really pretty nice um
1.199 coverage of borgwood there they didn&;t
1.199 give them much text i have to say
1.199 but they gave them four pictures which
1.199 is kind of nice and then you see things
1.199 that
1.199 kind of odd that they&;re here like
1.199 racing cars
1.199 there were a lot of companies that made
1.199 formula one cars in the day
1.199 this whole book isn&;t full of these
1.199 pictures but for some reason
1.199 this make which i can&;t really pronounce
1.199 has uh
1.199 formula one cars or bt-8 sports racing
1.199 cars
1.199 uh another formula one car listed so i&;m
1.199 going to assume that one of the editors
1.199 was a racing fan
1.199 here&;s one that really makes looking at
1.199 a book from the 70s
1.199 interesting 1972 brewbaker box
1.199 apparently had despite the very
1.199 very manly looking wheels on that and
1.199 that&;s a very 70s slotted wheel
1.199 it had a volkswagen beetle i think
1.199 engine or maybe it was a
1.199 type 2 transporters engine but basically
1.199 volkswagen mechanicals
1.199 looks like just kind of an oddball here
1.199 but actually the guy who designed this
1.199 his name is brubaker and he&;s still
1.199 around and uh
1.199 when he described his idea behind the
1.199 design it was really
1.199 interesting he was inspired by her he
1.199 wanted to create a car for surfers
1.199 it actually has a wooden bumper on it
1.199 and he used all kinds of interesting
1.199 materials and made a really interesting
1.199 um one-of-a-kind design and i really do
1.199 love that they
1.199 that they pay respect to it in this book
1.199 here
1.199 1972 to date it says i&;m pretty sure
1.199 that really is 1972-273
1.199 really i don&;t think many of these were
1.199 made maybe a dozen or so
1.199 um i you&;d have to correct me on that in
1.199 the comments
1.199 the 1956 gordon
1.199 three-wheeler this vehicle and there it
1.199 says here
1.199 built by a subsidiary of vernon pools
1.199 so is it a company that makes pools or
1.199 is it
1.199 i know that pools in britain is
1.199 often like betting pools either a couple
1.199 of guys who were in the pool business or
1.199 who were betting on horses decided to
1.199 build this car which has
1.199 an outboard engine that according to
1.199 this
1.199 drives the right-hand rear wheel only by
1.199 chain
1.199 that&;s just so tragic
1.199 it was basically an open car according
1.199 to this but it actually has a covering
1.199 on it that
1.199 i would have to say makes it look a
1.199 little more substantial
1.199 but how awful is that 1954 to 1958 so
1.199 they made it for four years apparently
1.199 um but there there you have it
1.199 two-stroke single cylinder
1.199 less than 200cc car we all know and love
1.199 the isetta bubble car
1.199 this is a 1954 is that a 236
1.199 cc coupe this is the italian version the
1.199 one that was actually designed
1.199 by uh eso it does explain here that this
1.199 is the car that that actually started
1.199 the bubble car boom
1.199 way back in 1953 that&;s a 1953 car
1.199 design
1.199 and it&;s the full bubble version no
1.199 sliding windows or nothing just
1.199 a peel back roof i i this used to be one
1.199 of my favorite
1.199 cars to look at when i was a kid
1.199 obviously they only made the azetta for
1.199 a couple of years
1.199 and then fortunately it&;s it&;s in the
1.199 same part of the alphabet so the eso
1.199 history is right below it 1962 to date
1.199 although eso has been gone since i think
1.199 76 maybe 77
1.199 but they made some fantastic cars like
1.199 here&;s the eso
1.199 grifo grifo gt coupe 1960s
1.199 uh the iso lele i love that name
1.199 uh really neat rad mad sports car from
1.199 the 70s which was their
1.199 current vehicle eso revolta is another
1.199 which is like a four-door a true
1.199 four-door supercar way back uh in the in
1.199 the early 70s but
1.199 i just had to point out the izetta in
1.199 this book and here&;s another favorite
1.199 page of mine in this book the there&;s
1.199 two kaisers
1.199 this insane thing which looks like a
1.199 zeppelin
1.199 i i don&;t even know what it is but
1.199 it looks huge and this is one thing
1.199 about this is that there&;s no people in
1.199 the picture and there&;s a door handle
1.199 but you really can&;t tell how big
1.199 or small this car actually is it
1.199 probably is tiny
1.199 but in this picture it looks like it&;s
1.199 the size of a building
1.199 and i always was fascinated by this it&;s
1.199 hideous but
1.199 it&;s fascinating nonetheless than the
1.199 american kaiser
1.199 because there&;s a gentleman whose name
1.199 was kaiser who was in shipbuilding
1.199 as you can imagine he made a killing
1.199 during the war
1.199 and then after the war he was swimming
1.199 in cash so he decided to start his own
1.199 car company he spent a lot of money uh
1.199 making his vehicles and tried to
1.199 break into the market way late in 1946
1.199 and
1.199 it didn&;t work out for him but he did
1.199 end up taking over willie&;s jeep
1.199 and as a result jeep sort of survived it
1.199 was without him without kaiser they
1.199 really wouldn&;t have survived
1.199 there&;s the other kaiser the kaiser
1.199 manhattan it&;s a great name for a car i
1.199 have to say
1.199 and then another one of my real
1.199 favorites of the 1950s
1.199 the cappy cheeky yes automobiles copy
1.199 barcelona the cappy was a or copy
1.199 i don&;t even know how you would say that
1.199 it&;s a three wheeler powered by a
1.199 montesa motorcycle engine
1.199 hispano villiers hispano so that would
1.199 be the spanish failures
1.199 gian giorgano is apparently credited
1.199 with the photograph so
1.199 125 cc it has i i never could figure
1.199 this picture out it&;s shown on a street
1.199 and in the background there&;s another
1.199 mini car that i think is kind of famous
1.199 but
1.199 i&;ve forgotten the name of it right now
1.199 you can see by the venting that it has a
1.199 rear
1.199 engine but if you look at the headlights
1.199 you can see one of the headlights
1.199 is actually external and the other one
1.199 is fired in with the bodywork
1.199 i can&;t like from here it looks okay
1.199 from this angle
1.199 but i can&;t just imagine what that
1.199 actually would look like from
1.199 from the front that must look ridiculous
1.199 but it&;s just it&;s such an unusual car
1.199 and i love the way it&;s
1.199 like probably red and white here or red
1.199 and yellow maybe
1.199 since this you know spanish flag colors
1.199 perhaps klein schnitzger
1.199 is here uh germany would be west germany
1.199 1950 to 1957 but there&;s no picture of
1.199 the kleinschnicker but there is a
1.199 picture of
1.199 this thing klein wolf germany 1950 to
1.199 1951
1.199 and this picture is just this guy with
1.199 this horrible helmet
1.199 it looks like it&;s plastic um
1.199 and it&;s 200 cc so that would probably
1.199 be the 198 cc
1.199 elo or ilo engine i don&;t know if the
1.199 engine&;s in the front or the rear it
1.199 doesn&;t
1.199 say but yeah and it&;s in in the winter
1.199 um a tiny one of the tiny uh early 50s
1.199 just right after the war
1.199 german micro cars 1957 moshe 175 cc
1.199 it&;s hard to find information on these i
1.199 think they started out as an
1.199 actual pedal car like an actual literal
1.199 pedal-powered car and moshe was this
1.199 kind of
1.199 bicycle i think his name was charles
1.199 moshe
1.199 a french bicycle inventor mechanic so to
1.199 speak
1.199 he made pedal cars and then he added
1.199 these little tiny engines to them
1.199 uh 100 cc 175 cc
1.199 it&;s it&;s a little micro car it&;s very
1.199 small looks like it&;s on like a path
1.199 here it&;s not even like a proper road
1.199 1968 mo&;s this is an american
1.199 a real exotic and amazing american
1.199 specialty car
1.199 that was made by this guy whose name was
1.199 mose
1.199 madison wisconsin bruce
1.199 moe&;s was his name these are really
1.199 something else
1.199 the very it&;s very hard to find
1.199 information on them and hardly any were
1.199 made i don&;t even think it says how many
1.199 were made here
1.199 but it says 1968 to date so apparently
1.199 he was still making cars at the time
1.199 that this book was
1.199 printed nsu prinz or prince
1.199 is how you would in english 598 cc but
1.199 that&;s not a two-stroke that&;s a
1.199 four-stroke
1.199 rear-engine car and at the time they
1.199 were developing the
1.199 wenkel or vanco engine this had the
1.199 wankel engine in the front in
1.199 front-wheel drive
1.199 the row 80. so these are still around i
1.199 actually saw one of these for sale on
1.199 ebay
1.199 not long ago maybe three or four grand
1.199 they wanted for it and it just wasn&;t my
1.199 thing
1.199 but it didn&;t it wasn&;t even rusty they
1.199 sold them here in the states
1.199 and uh all over western europe really
1.199 amazing car
1.199 but my personal favorite though was not
1.199 so much this it was always
1.199 the nsu fiat wiensberg
1.199 i can&;t get over this i never could
1.199 figure out what it was until recently
1.199 that this is actually a
1.199 german fiat 500 i think
1.199 so the fiat 500 we all know what those
1.199 are little kind of egg-shaped car or
1.199 gumdrop shaped car maybe built in italy
1.199 in the millions
1.199 in the 50s 60s and 70s it went over to
1.199 germany
1.199 and the germans they designed their own
1.199 body style for the fiat 500
1.199 and that&;s what this is and i actually
1.199 have a model of one of these i&;ll have
1.199 to show that
1.199 at some point 1963 peel p50
1.199 49 cc single cedar coupe
1.199 and it&;s parked just on the side of the
1.199 street i&;ve always loved
1.199 uh that picture the way it was just
1.199 parked on the street no one has
1.199 disturbed it i think
1.199 until they saw jeremy clarkson drive one
1.199 of these and
1.199 walk through the bbc center with it in
1.199 uh 2007 i think
1.199 um people wouldn&;t have guessed that
1.199 this thing weighs like
1.199 maybe a hundred pounds or you know could
1.199 just take it and pick it up
1.199 and just carry it away but the owner
1.199 was able to leave it on the street and
1.199 someone has photographed it i love these
1.199 little golf cart wheels on it
1.199 the side vent the door is on the
1.199 opposite side
1.199 so it&;s really neat how you really can&;t
1.199 tell how you would get into it from
1.199 from this picture and peugeot
1.199 their current car in 1973 was the 504
1.199 which is a great car
1.199 and it&;s all downhill from there pujo
1.199 sorry
1.199 ah here&;s another you know besides puma
1.199 another interesting thing you learned
1.199 from these encyclopedias this cube right
1.199 here
1.199 1968 quasar unipower
1.199 no idea what on earth the meaning of
1.199 that is
1.199 it&;s more of a statement than anything
1.199 else
1.199 and it&;s got these it looks like sliding
1.199 doors really kind of amazing but i
1.199 really love
1.199 that what is it it&;s got an 1100 cc
1.199 where&;d they put the engine 1100 cc
1.199 where do they fit an engine that large
1.199 and that i don&;t know
1.199 it&;s six feet high yeah it looks it it
1.199 looks
1.199 definitely looks pretty tall but that&;d
1.199 be really neat to go for a ride in one
1.199 of those it looks almost like a
1.199 pokemobile doesn&;t it
1.199 renault yeah renault&;s uh
1.199 their current car of the day you have
1.199 the 1100 saloon it says renault 1100
1.199 which is actually i think a renault 10
1.199 but it doesn&;t say that here the current
1.199 renault car
1.199 of the day is this the 15 ts
1.199 does that look very 70s
1.199 here&;s another page i marked off because
1.199 it has another one of these
1.199 obscure mobiles the rousey
1.199 1949 rousseau 700cc
1.199 saloon i gotta say of all the channels
1.199 on youtube there&;s only one where you&;re
1.199 ever going to get
1.199 some history on the rousey or any car
1.199 like it
1.199 made in france 1949 to 1950s
1.199 probably means they made a handful it&;s
1.199 a light car
1.199 obviously 700 cc horizontally opposed
1.199 four-cylinder
1.199 two-stroke engine that&;s something else
1.199 front-wheel drive
1.199 two-door saloon is the only model with
1.199 backwards opening doors
1.199 and it looks awful but you know you&;re
1.199 never going to see that anywhere else i
1.199 i
1.199 don&;t think i&;ve ever seen um because
1.199 i&;m sure if you just type rousey into
1.199 the internet it&;d just be somebody&;s
1.199 name you just see a bunch of people
1.199 i don&;t think you&;d see a picture of
1.199 this awful car
1.199 i&;m sure the french want to forget that
1.199 they even made it
1.199 but you know there&;s a rover i think uh
1.199 one another page i&;ve got marked off
1.199 here
1.199 toyota yeah toyota actually goes back
1.199 quite a ways
1.199 and when you look back in time here you
1.199 almost see an american style
1.199 car and this model ba and aaa
1.199 1930s and 40s toyotas look very much
1.199 american and then the 1949
1.199 toyota essay that doesn&;t really look
1.199 american
1.199 except the front end kind of does that&;s
1.199 kind of like a little bit of lincoln
1.199 town car isn&;t isn&;t it
1.199 but then the rest of it is kind of like
1.199 that arrow miner we saw
1.199 at the earlier part of the catalog so
1.199 kind of like a european
1.199 almost volkswagen beetle body with a
1.199 lincoln front end four-cylinder engine
1.199 which toyotas often were
1.199 toyota&;s current offerings in 1973 you
1.199 have the publica
1.199 800 this cut this is a classic car now
1.199 that&;s probably sought after
1.199 and then the toyota crown was their
1.199 luxury car
1.199 but the uh the trabant made by veb
1.199 sox and ring automobile work zvikao
1.199 which we&;ll get to zwick out in a second
1.199 here but yeah there&;s the trabant
1.199 universal
1.199 i have a model of one of those too
1.199 actually it&;s an amazing car
1.199 two-stroke so is the willam
1.199 two-seater now here&;s the car i really
1.199 like the wolsley 1300
1.199 and then there&;s the bigger wolseley and
1.199 i believe
1.199 in here it&;ll say 19 at wolsley 1911 to
1.199 date so they&;re still around
1.199 at the time of the printing of this book
1.199 wellesley uh part of
1.199 british layland yes british layland
1.199 motor corporation is credited with the
1.199 photograph
1.199 and when you go into the back of the
1.199 book i always like the z
1.199 section because this is where where you
1.199 get into things that i would never have
1.199 heard of or
1.199 never have seen anywhere else the zil
1.199 the russian zil limousine
1.199 the russian zim limousine the russian
1.199 this limousine if you&;re wondering why
1.199 they&;re all russian in the
1.199 russian language zavolt means works
1.199 so being a communist country if you set
1.199 up a factory called
1.199 no matter what it was called moscow
1.199 works you know it would have the letter
1.199 z
1.199 in the acronym somewhere so z often
1.199 shows up
1.199 in um automobile company names in russia
1.199 because
1.199 it means it means works basically so
1.199 that&;s why they they kind of dominate
1.199 the z section but then there&;s two real
1.199 interesting vehicles here that
1.199 the zundapop janus which has a front
1.199 opening door like the aceta
1.199 very similar to the azetta except the
1.199 rear door also opens
1.199 uh i nearly bought a model of one of
1.199 these in 118 scale but the reason i
1.199 didn&;t buy it is because the doors
1.199 didn&;t open
1.199 like why would you want a model of a car
1.199 that is famous for the front and rear of
1.199 the car
1.199 opening if the doors don&;t open on that
1.199 model so i i didn&;t
1.199 i didn&;t buy it but this is the one i
1.199 really really love the zunder
1.199 1960s zunder and i just love the color
1.199 it&;s just such an odd looking but neat
1.199 looking
1.199 car and there&;s not much about it here
1.199 200 were made
1.199 zunder in in argentina
1.199 but yeah we&;re at the back of the book
1.199 now and uh the very very last entry in
1.199 this book
1.199 is this car right here the zwickau
1.199 p70 also made by veb
1.199 automobile works vikal which is
1.199 uh the east german auto proprietor the
1.199 same
1.199 people who made the trabant this is the
1.199 car that predated the turbine 1956-1959
1.199 25 000 of these were made so it&;ll be
1.199 plastic this vehicle
1.199 and again it&;s got the same type of uh
1.199 almost like red and white color scheme
1.199 as this
1.199 car here it&;s kind of like a z
1.199 almost very much like a z shape in the z
1.199 section of the book
1.199 before you come to a glossary yeah
1.199 that&;s pretty much it before you get to
1.199 the index
1.199 where it probably just has just some
1.199 personality names and probably some
1.199 additional photo credits and things like
1.199 that how far did we go though we went
1.199 all the way to the end which was
1.199 page 738
1.199 what page did it starts page 60 or so so
1.199 yeah 700 pages
1.199 of of automotive history this is the
1.199 book
1.199 that i learned about cars from
1.199 but there there&;s a lot of things that i
1.199 discovered
1.199 some of them weird nonsense like this
1.199 that you know
1.199 you&;ll never see anywhere else and some
1.199 of it just
1.199 looking back in time at famous companies
1.199 like volvo
1.199 this is a really great book if you can
1.199 get your hands on a copy of one of these
1.199 it&;s probably not expensive today you
1.199 probably get it for below the actual
1.199 price it was when it was in print
1.199 which was thirty dollars you could
1.199 probably get one today for for less than
1.199 that on ebay or something or other
1.199 but anyway i hope that you enjoyed
1.199 taking a look
1.199 at this book with me and uh coming down
1.199 a trip down memory lane
1.199 if you enjoyed this video please leave a
