Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: OK so as planned We’re going to talk about tires so I hope you have a little bit of time ahead because it might be a bit long but I think it’s an important topic not only to make great lap times obviously but also and above all to have fun I think it is with the brakes it’s one of the most limiting factors on having fun on track take a small cup of something sit down and we’re going to get grippy or « grifty » or even hydroplanning Let’s go ! ok so before talking about the tires I just wanted to insist on a point which is super important, I mean tires like a lot of car parts it’s something quite subjective what will be cool for me may not necessarily be cool for you the car is how I like it I have a certain level which forces me, for example, to drive in 205 wide when I could be in 185 at the rear, but I don’t feel like switching to a car that’s a little more playful on the rear axle, in short, that’s all to say that that’s really something that’s very subjective and all that I’m going to tell you here may not necessarily be valid for you and it’s one of the things that is the most boring in the choice of tires, it’s i.e. what will be cool for someone won’t be for someone else so I brought out a good old R888 as you can see so this is my first experience with semi slicks that’s a A048 so that’s I think my favorite compound so far and that’s the 2nd semi-slicks I tried on the Civic and that’s the a052 that’s what I had to choose by default because in this dimension there in semi-slicks they are the only (Yokohama) option In France they are sold as semi-slicks in Japan it’s more like ultra high performance tires so in France they are the successors of those whereas in Japan not at all in Japan they have the A050 which are the upgraded model to the A048 so we are going we are going back in time a little bit and so we are going to switch to the R888 which are the first tires that I’ve fitted on the Civic well it’s not exactly true I had mounted some snow Dunlop to pass the inspection at the time but I had only done straight lines with them but the first real tires that I mounted on this Civic were the R888s and so I was like crazy when I received them I was really happy they were the tires you had to have at the time everything everyone had these on all the forums and so I said to myself I need this thing so I’m get them I did my first track sessions with it and the thing is that the Civic was still in debugging so I I was not able to use the tires right away as I would have liked I had small reliability issues with the car the chassis was not as I would have wanted so I never really had explored the limits of the R888s right away later when the Civic was more reliable I was able to explore the limits of the 888 a little bit more in detail and so what I noticed at the time was that well it was cool on the 3 4 laps but over a 20 minute sessions for example they finally reached a peak of performance and they became unpredictable so I got caught several times especially once in Dijon where I lost the rear and so that happened to me several times luckily it didn’t happen in Charade but that’s something I blamed them for and afterwards I didn’t like their design either which they are much too square you see the shoulders there I don’t know if they ‘re really square compared to the 048 so just talking about the A048 we’re going to them and we’re going to talk about it a little more in detail so the A048 is really the tire with which I had the most fun on track, I mean when I went from the R888 to the A048 it was no longer the same car at all, I mean I could really attack on complete sessions because the car was finally reliable I could really go for it over full sessions without any without any difference in performance between the start of the session the middle of the session and the end of the session as you can see there are a few videos lying around on my youtube channel then whether it rains even under torrents of rain or whether it’s super super hot in the middle of summer I remember a 2-day session at Lurcy-lévy in the middle of a great heat where they They never never betrayed me not even on heavy braking or anything ok the only time it really went a little dirty was during an Autoworks day when the track was super greasy with mega changing conditions finally I was super hot but it is not the tire it was more me who was really at fault otherwise they never betrayed me even on weekends at Magny-Cours you set your pressure in the morning you set your pressure at noon DONE after you don’t you don’t even have to think about it anymore whether you’re with a passenger or on your own your tire will always behave the same way and that’s something as an amateur driver it’s really important to have fun on the track and that’s really what I love about this tire it was something that I hope to find again with the a052s when I get to know them a little better but for now it’s not really the case on several occasions with those tires there I was really at the limit on the rear axle braking completely sideway but it was always predictable and even so she never made me spin violently I have lots of examples in head of that and borderline brakings and even so, every time they were always there to save me so we’re going to switch to the 052 so there I don’t have much experience with those since I did only one trackday and most of the trackday was in the rain and precisely in the rain those were incredible, I mean that you just had to have the « courage » to bring some temperature in and once they were in temperature bam it’s OK you could beat the hell out of it even under downpours I remember at Magny-Cours you take I don’t know almost 200 under the rain bam you smash your you take your braking point and that’s It except from times when you ‘re a bit too hot and again there again the car well it will warn you it will lock the front wheels a little bit and that’s it but it won’t trow you in a nasty spin , whereas those there maybe I was a little rusty and a little hot at Spa but under the downpour I was not at peace, especially on heavy braking where several I found myself spinning or locking the fronts at very high speed so luckily I had the chance to have a dry session and therefore I did not find the confidence I had with the A048s I mean with the A048 you come to long curves in really long curves where you are at I don’t know 100mph something like that bam you throw the car in the apex the car grips and DONE you don’t have to think about anything else whereas these ones you are a little more on eggs or I don’t know you don’t have the feeling that they really communicate as much grip as the A048 it’s once again it’s my that’s my feeling that’s my feeling with the Civic and that’s it and in the rain well in a straight line yes it was ok no aquaplaning fortunately thanks to its super long longitudinal grooves that we don’t have at all on the 048s by the way but these ones still help to evacuate the water well but on the other hand yeah I found myself in the dry with a good nasty spin not like those long slides that you catch up by countersteering by putting a bit of gas that I could have had with the A048 and about the a052 I had geeked a little bit I follow lot of Japanese drivers on the Internet and in particular one who races in Tohoku in the north of Japan and he had the same feeling he found them not that good not as good as real semi-slicks like the A050 of course but not like these either and apparently from what I understood Yokohama would have changed the recipe or the compound several times I don’t know how to say in French I’ve been making my self Jean-Claude Vandame like the recipe for A052 gum since they came out there have been several developments So I don’t know I will see at the Jap n Car festival and at the HEM thankfully and so I really hope that under the slightly better conditions than at Spa I’ll find back the confidence I had with the A048s because if I I can’t find it, I’m going to have to adapt a little bit and I think it’s a bit of a shame so that’s my thoughts on the A052 for the moment so not as predictable as the A048 and especially not as grippy what but once again I’m really waiting to see this summer under milder conditions with hotter temperatures but I’m saying that but with those there no matter the temperatures no matter the conditions they were always there so that’s what tells me I’m a little worried but we’ll see I would like to have your feedback on the R888s but hey, they’re a bit outdated, these ones are old so I think they ‘ve made progress but I think that there is always this shoulder which is super super pronounced whereas the A048 are a little more domed and you have a little more how to say you have the shoulders which finally I don’t know the tire works a bit more and so you really feel more confident with it and that’s what I liked with it with the A048 on top of that are much prettier I don’t know it’s really not I don’t know I frankly find it disgusting the tire all square like that I hate it MOVE it whereas that there the little thing all pudgy like that plus it fits a bit better in the fenders and there it was really an excellent product that thing I I’m really pissed off that we no longer have the equivalent really even if they sell it as the equivalent I’m not sure it’s really really the same in any case I saw according to a first first micro survey that I had done on facebook some were really happy with the A052s so once again I insist what I’m saying here is it’s really not it’s really not to be taken literally like that it’s depends on your car your experience your feelings it’s really something that is super subjective so yeah like I said there are plenty of people who are happy with the A052 and fortunately because I mean there are a lot of people who worked to develop these tires for a certain purpose and so it would be a real shame if it didn’t meet our expectations so here we are I hope we’ll meet again I don’t know tell me in the comments if you plan to go to the Jap n car festival or if you plan to go to the HEM in any case I will be delighted to discuss with you about your feedback on tires because it is really a topic that fascinates me as much as aero and besides I think that the next the next video we’re going to talk a little bit about cooling by the way so I’m all excited at the idea of talking about it because I’m going to have fun making these small modifications and I hope you will like it too Ciao .
