Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: all right so the uh engines at the at the Machine Shop uh getting the car ready to go uh to paint and body work um so I’m going to do a little video about the books that I recommend you get if you’re interested in in doing a restoration of an xk120 and I’ll tell you also why I recommend these books the first book here is uh Jaguar xk120 uh the anatomy of a cult object and this is by ER Schmid and he’s a uh I think he’s s ceas but this he was an xk120 specialist from Switzerland and so this book is absolutely fantastic when it comes to a reference guide for originality really went in tremendous detail about um a lot of the uh I think it starts off with body components and the different types drop head fixed head open two catar and then he gets in on a system basis and goes into great detail about what the markings mean on the on the casings um so this is a fantastic book to have uh for originality reference it’s mostly what I use this for I will tell you one thing incredibly expensive um I think they only made a few cop maybe a couple hundred or so copies I’m not exactly sure um but uh yeah you these are like $1,200 on eBay if you find one it was that’s not what I paid for it but uh you know I guess I got it early but fantastic reference guide for uh for originality uh sake now this one is actually probably the most important one one to get um thankfully they made a lot of the xk120 versions and this is the uh the Bernard ver art V art I’m not exactly sure to pronounce that um Jaguar xk2 xk120 explored uh the plates and so this is by a french guy this guy right here and he has gone through and actually handdrawn with great detail all of the components of the xk120 so this is not really a book for reading sake it’s more of a reference side and I mean look at this he goes me some great detail about you know I mean every single piece and component here in a master in a master cylinder for the brakes I mean he goes into great detail about things like thread counts and and the size of nuts and bolts and uh washer sizes and it’s just absolutely tremendous book now there are some minor errors here and there a lot of those errors are are widely known it gets into some detail on the body um you know this this is this I treat this as a shop manual um you know thankfully like there’s so many of these that were made that you can get these for 300 bucks maybe you can find one 300 bucks I think that’s what I paid maybe used slightly less but you know I I bring it out to the shop so I’m not afraid to get oil on this and I’ll tell you this there are versions also for the xk140 and xk150 and those are very limited printings and if you find one of those you might spend as much as as uh that’s $1,500 on those um but but yeah I mean just absolutely great reference guide that you know beside being a great reference guide it’s beautiful to look at I mean these are all handdrawn diagrams uh you know uh pretty awesome and and you know I think this is probably a must have like if you going to get any book this is the one to get for sure kind of just wanted to show this one off I just recently got this from a gentleman out over in the UK H Blanchard I believe was his uh his um his username but uh so what this is this is a spare parts catalog now these aren’t necessarily essential for restoration uh a lot of these uh diagrams that were offered in these spare parts cataloges uh are actually on like sng Barrett’s website and I think they’re actually also referenced in the um in the manual um so look in the back here one sec see if I can get in doing this onehanded so you can see in the back here that uh you know they have these like semi- isometric exploded views and uh I guess said most of these are actually in they’re available on on U on like SG Barrett’s website or Moss Motors and some of them are referenced in the uh in the actual service manual but uh you know there’s also some references to part numbers uh some of these numbers are relevant some of them are are are no longer in use but just a great guide for trying to figure out exactly how everything’s interconnected uh man I got to tell you this one’s in fantastic shape too i’ you know Finding original versions for the fix head Coupe are very uncommon to begin with but we’ll let one in this condition so very happy to have found that uh so this is a supplement to uh what they call the j8 publication so this is just addressing the fix head Coupe uh body uh components the actual spare parts catalog which I’ll show you next is every other component common to both the fixed head Coupe actually I think the fixed head Coupe drop head Coupe and also the open two Cedar and here’s the j8 publication this is actually a first edition um you can tell based off of I think the telephone number uh which Edition it is so um this would actually have been a little old for my car uh this would have come with the uh the 50s early like 50 51 would have been more appropriate for but again you know these exploded diagrams are great uh to kind of learn everything’s interconnected um you know these things are great to put next to like your tool roll on the back of your car you know when you bring it to a show it just kind of getes that gives that extra originality touch but yeah again special thanks to uh H Blanchard for selling me these I’ve been looking for these for a long time and they’re just absolutely great okay so I said the VR book was the most important book I I was actually wrong this is the most important book so you need to get yourself a service manual uh from Coventry or the or I should say the original service manual so with this is actually a later publication this is not what the originals look like and this is my in-house uh copy I’ve got a copy that I keep outside and I’m not afraid to get dirty uh you know just everything you need to know about maintenance engine overhaul gearbox um reason I grabbed this one because it actually gets more into some additional models like the 140 and the 150 150s and some of the sedans you know so the things that are common to um the 120 and the Mark 7 I think they issued supplements for the 140 so some of this data in the 120 section is Rel for the 140 uh and then any supplements are are further in the back so got to get one of these really important number one okay so this is the CLA Sager I believe it’s how it’s pronounced jaguar xk120 in detail you know uh another fantastic reference guide some history um why I like this book The or I should say what I usually reference the most in this book it has these great it has these great appendices in the back of the book book and I’ve never seen a chart like this in any other book to where it’ll tell you how many varieties there are of and here’s the paint colors here’s the interior trim and uh how many different varieties there there were uh of the different uh models that they put out so like for example let’s see here fixed head coupe the paint color let’s say you had black with a uh with a with a biscuit interior they made 30 of those they made 295 the black with the red interior so this is actually I believe from the perspective of The Concourse judging um for Jaguar this is the reference guide for what constitutes originality as far as color schemes so uh besides that I mean great book other great reference information uh just worth getting uh probably $50 range uh you know definitely one you want to have all right this is another great reference guide by Philip Porter who’s done a lot of great stuff on on Jaguar xk1 120s and another xks I believe again another great reference guide visually stunning book um this one’s broken down by category here so at the top you know body shell you let’s see here body trim and then what this one does is it goes by model so it’ll start with the alloy on some of the sections if there’s something different with the alloy body that’s the xk120 um aluminum Alloys then I’ll go into just the standard xk120 and then it jump into the 140 and then it’ll jump into the 150 in just in various different sections on different particular subject matter so what do I use this book for the for the most it’s got the absolute best um literature section and tool section as far as describing um which tools were in the tool belts uh I mean it goes into great tremendous detail and a lot of this was done by a gentleman named Roger Payne who lives in Australia I believe he’s active on the Jag forms um man I he really went to tremendous detail about you know pointing out you know which tools are are original what to look for you know the sequence of which tools would have been available uh during you know what what the time that your car was produced likewise with uh the service manuals you know here here’s that fix head Coupe uh manual I was talking about other spare parts catalog I mean this he’s got he’s he breaks the whole thing down and this is probably the most upto-date uh information you’re going to find as far as original literature and tools besides that um again really great information on restoration and originality based on the different uh categories uh uh this is another must have okay so this is the jaguar xk120 jcna concour judging guide so if your aim is concour quality uh as far as being as original as you possibly can I mean this is the guide um I don’t know if this is the most up-to-date version but I do know that this particular version was incredibly detailed and a lot of people complained about it uh I mean those people are getting their cars judged but if you’re restoring a car the detail is welcome so um you know again it’s broken down by by um by category uh lots of great input like you know in your fixed head Coupe like what kind of foot pad there was so I mean if your goal is 100% originality this is a must okay next is how to power tune your XK engine so this gives uh details on the 3.4 3.8 and 4.2 I will say that the overhaul section of um of the service manual gives some great detail on engine overhaul um but with this particular book there’s a lot of additional information here they’re doing a bearing uh crunch test on the rod uh a lot of great information on clearances the stuff that we showed in the last video um where I was doing some some measurements uh but this book actually goes into into greater detail about you know when it makes sense to have say a certain skirt clearance between your piston and and your and your cylinder boore uh when you’re dealing with either a racing engine or a driver engine so um this is a must have um there’s some information here I haven’t seen anywhere else uh so if you’re looking to rebuild an engine head or an engine block definitely get this one and last but not least uh Jaguar XK DIY by Bob exelby um So He restored an xk120 I think maybe like 10 15 years ago and so when I first got this book it you know it wasn’t that intrigu to me uh the order seemed kind of out of place there’s lots of advertising in it um but on Second Glance as I started the restoration of this car I mean I kind of realized that the order of it you know it makes more sense he’s kind of starting it’s kind of how he would start the restoration the order he would take on things and he’s got these little Snippets where he goes into some details about some lessons learned and so I found this book very useful in terms of um uh you know uh just just looking out for certain things as I’ve gone through the process of taking this car apart uh this is one of my favorite Parts in the back of this book he’s got um he’s got an index here of all the parts manufacturers and what they specialize in and it’s colorcoded to where you know it’ll indicate if it’s an actual XK Specialist or if it’s just a general Parts distributor like SMG Barrett or Moss that’s a fantastic reference he’s got some other good information here in the appendices uh he’s also got good information about um what he’s got in his shop you know um and like the kinds of paints and solvents and cleaners and things like that that he uses oil types uh he goes into some detail about uh modernizing the maintenance schedule uh you know following the maintenance schedule in the uh service mans really not practical today so he he kind of he kind of offers a correction on how to do that I shouldn’t say correction but his input um really good book I mean I I’ve learned so much from this book just uh just flipping through it um I recommend you read this one from front to back uh rather than trying to pick out sections kind of as you work through your rest restoration cuz it will follow in some kind of order uh the kinds of things that you’ll approach so definitely want to get get get a handle on that one good one all right so that’s basically it um you know just an update on the car uh last night I was just stripping out everything here in the engine bay um you know it’s not really good good video it’s not really entertaining to watch me rip stuff out so I really haven’t been covering that but just to kind of give you an update um so we pretty much got the engine bay all cleared out all the electrics um you know all of the uh you know the valances we got those out the air cleaner got that out uh so pretty much what’s left on this on the front is the uh brake master cylinder all the brake lines uh the uh so we’re going to get that out and then uh windshield trim just some more stuff on the inside and that pretty much is it as far as what I plan to do with the body before prepping it to go off for paint uh but uh yeah just an update on where this is at apologize for the mess but I hope to get it out in a month and then we probably won’t see this car for you know another 6 to eight months so plan is to get the engine back uh start putting that together uh here next month uh maybe uh maybe get the frame back for the car put the engine on it get the engine uh you know start to test it make sure it’s running right so that’s kind of what the next 6 months look like for uh for the car restoration so anyway appreciate 2.04 you need to get yourself a service
2.04 manual uh from Coventry or the or I
2.04 should say the original service manual
2.04 so with this is actually a later
2.04 publication this is not what the
2.04 originals look like and this is my
2.04 in-house uh
2.04 copy I&;ve got a copy that I keep outside
2.04 and I&;m not afraid to get dirty uh you
2.04 know just everything you need to know
2.04 about maintenance engine overhaul
2.04 gearbox um reason I grabbed this one
2.04 because it actually gets more into some
2.04 additional models like the 140 and the
2.04 150 150s and some of the sedans you know
2.04 so the things that are common to
2.04 um the 120 and the Mark 7 I think they
2.04 issued supplements for the 140 so some
2.04 of this data in the 120 section is Rel
2.04 for the 140 uh and then any supplements
2.04 are are further in the back so got to
2.04 get one of these really important number
2.04 one okay so this is the CLA Sager I
2.04 believe it&;s how it&;s pronounced jaguar
2.04 xk120 in detail you know uh another
2.04 fantastic reference guide some
2.04 history um why I like this book The or I
2.04 should say what I usually reference the
2.04 most in this
2.04 book it has these great it has these
2.04 great appendices in the back of the book
2.04 book and I&;ve never seen a chart like
2.04 this in any other book to where it&;ll
2.04 tell you how many varieties there are of
2.04 and here&;s the paint colors here&;s the
2.04 interior
2.04 trim and uh how many different varieties
2.04 there there
2.04 were uh of the different uh models that
2.04 they put out so like for example let&;s
2.04 see here fixed head coupe the paint
2.04 color let&;s say you had black with a uh
2.04 with a with a biscuit interior they made
2.04 30 of those they made 295 the black with
2.04 the red interior so this is actually I
2.04 believe from the perspective of The
2.04 Concourse judging um for Jaguar this is
2.04 the reference guide for what constitutes
2.04 originality as far as color schemes so
2.04 uh besides that I mean great book other
2.04 great reference
2.04 information uh just worth getting uh
2.04 probably $50 range uh you know
2.04 definitely one you want to
2.04 have all right this is another great
2.04 reference guide by Philip Porter who&;s
2.04 done a lot of great stuff on on Jaguar
2.04 xk1 120s and another xks I believe again
2.04 another great reference guide visually
2.04 stunning book um this one&;s broken down
2.04 by category here so at the top you know
2.04 body
2.04 shell you let&;s see
2.04 here body trim and then what this one
2.04 does is it goes
2.04 by model so it&;ll start with the alloy
2.04 on some of the sections if there&;s
2.04 something different with the alloy body
2.04 that&;s the xk120 um aluminum Alloys then
2.04 I&;ll go into just the standard
2.04 xk120 and then it jump into the
2.04 140 and then it&;ll jump into the 150 in
2.04 just in various different sections on
2.04 different particular subject matter so
2.04 what do I use this book for the for the
2.04 most it&;s got the absolute best
2.04 um literature section and tool section
2.04 as far as
2.04 describing um which tools were in the
2.04 tool
2.04 belts uh I mean it goes into great
2.04 tremendous detail and a lot of this was
2.04 done by a gentleman named Roger Payne
2.04 who lives in Australia I believe he&;s
2.04 active on the Jag
2.04 forms um man I he really went to
2.04 tremendous detail about you know
2.04 pointing out you know which tools are
2.04 are original what to look for you know
2.04 the sequence of which tools would have
2.04 been available uh during you know what
2.04 what the time that your car was
2.04 produced likewise with uh the service
2.04 manuals you know here here&;s that fix
2.04 head Coupe uh manual I was talking about
2.04 other spare parts catalog I mean this
2.04 he&;s got he&;s he breaks the whole thing
2.04 down and this is probably the most
2.04 upto-date uh information you&;re going to
2.04 find as far as original literature and
2.04 tools besides that um again really great
2.04 information on restoration and
2.04 originality based on the different uh
2.04 categories uh uh this is another must
2.04 have okay so this is the jaguar xk120
2.04 jcna concour judging guide so if your
2.04 aim is concour quality uh as far as
2.04 being as original as you possibly can I
2.04 mean this is the guide um I don&;t know
2.04 if this is the most up-to-date version
2.04 but I do know that this particular
2.04 version was incredibly detailed and a
2.04 lot of people complained about it uh I
2.04 mean those people are getting their cars
2.04 judged but if you&;re restoring a car the
2.04 detail is welcome so um you know again
2.04 it&;s broken down by by um by category uh
2.04 lots of great input like you know in
2.04 your fixed head Coupe like what kind of
2.04 foot pad there was so I mean if your
2.04 goal is 100% originality this is a
2.04 must okay next is how to power tune your
2.04 XK engine so this gives uh details on
2.04 the 3.4 3.8 and 4.2 I will say that the
2.04 overhaul section of um of the service
2.04 manual gives some great detail on engine
2.04 overhaul um but with this particular
2.04 book there&;s a lot of additional
2.04 information here they&;re doing a bearing
2.04 uh crunch test on the rod uh a lot of
2.04 great information on clearances the
2.04 stuff that we showed in the last video
2.04 um where I was doing some some
2.04 measurements uh but this book actually
2.04 goes into into greater detail about you
2.04 know when it makes sense to have say a
2.04 certain skirt clearance between your
2.04 piston and and your and your cylinder
2.04 boore uh when you&;re dealing with either
2.04 a racing engine or a driver engine so um
2.04 this is a must have um there&;s some
2.04 information here I haven&;t seen anywhere
2.04 else uh so if you&;re looking to rebuild
2.04 an engine head or an engine block
2.04 definitely get this one and last but not
2.04 least uh Jaguar XK DIY by Bob
2.04 exelby um So He restored an xk120 I
2.04 think maybe like 10 15 years ago and so
2.04 when I first got this book it you know
2.04 it wasn&;t that intrigu to me uh the
2.04 order seemed kind of out of place
2.04 there&;s lots of advertising in it um but
2.04 on Second Glance as I started the
2.04 restoration of this car I mean I kind of
2.04 realized that the order of it you know
2.04 it makes more sense he&;s kind of
2.04 starting it&;s kind of how he would start
2.04 the restoration the order he would take
2.04 on things and he&;s got these little
2.04 Snippets where he goes into some details
2.04 about some lessons learned and so I
2.04 found this book very useful in terms of
2.04 um uh you know uh just just looking out
2.04 for certain things as I&;ve gone through
2.04 the process of taking this car apart uh
2.04 this is one of my favorite Parts in the
2.04 back of this book he&;s got um he&;s got
2.04 an index here of all the parts
2.04 manufacturers and what they specialize
2.04 in and it&;s colorcoded to where you know
2.04 it&;ll indicate if it&;s an actual XK
2.04 Specialist or if it&;s just a general
2.04 Parts distributor like SMG Barrett or
2.04 Moss that&;s a fantastic reference he&;s
2.04 got some other good information here in
2.04 the
2.04 appendices uh he&;s also got good
2.04 information about um what he&;s got in
2.04 his shop you know um and like the kinds
2.04 of paints and solvents and cleaners and
2.04 things like that that he uses oil types
2.04 uh he goes into some detail about uh
2.04 modernizing the maintenance schedule uh
2.04 you know following the maintenance
2.04 schedule in the uh service mans really
2.04 not practical today so he he kind of he
2.04 kind of offers a correction on how to do
2.04 that I shouldn&;t say correction but his
2.04 input um really good book I mean I I&;ve
2.04 learned so much from this book just uh
2.04 just flipping through it um I recommend
2.04 you read this one from front to back uh
2.04 rather than trying to pick out sections
2.04 kind of as you work through your rest
2.04 restoration cuz it will follow in some
2.04 kind of order uh the kinds of things
2.04 that you&;ll approach so definitely want
2.04 to get get get a handle on that one good
2.04 one all right so that&;s basically it um
2.04 you know just an update on the car uh
2.04 last night I was just stripping out
2.04 everything here in the engine bay um you
2.04 know it&;s not really good good video
2.04 it&;s not really entertaining to watch me
2.04 rip stuff out so I really haven&;t been
2.04 covering that but just to kind of give
2.04 you an update um so we pretty much got
2.04 the engine bay all cleared out all the
2.04 electrics um you know all of the uh you
2.04 know the valances we got those out the
2.04 air cleaner got that out uh so pretty
2.04 much what&;s left on this on the front is
2.04 the uh brake master cylinder all the
2.04 brake
2.04 lines uh the uh so we&;re going to get
2.04 that out and then uh windshield trim
2.04 just some more stuff on the inside and
2.04 that pretty much is it as far as what I
2.04 plan to do with the body before prepping
2.04 it to go off for paint uh but uh yeah
2.04 just an update on where this is at
2.04 apologize for the mess but I hope to get
2.04 it out in a month and then we probably
2.04 won&;t see this car for you know another
2.04 6 to eight months so plan is to get the
2.04 engine back uh start putting that
2.04 together uh here next month uh maybe uh
2.04 maybe get the frame back for the car put
2.04 the engine on it get the engine uh you
2.04 know start to test it make sure it&;s
2.04 running right so that&;s kind of what the
2.04 next 6 months look like for uh for the
2.04 car restoration so anyway appreciate you
